Am looking for a replacement battery for L2850. This tractor has a sensor coming out of one of the cells. I got a price of 364.00 and almost passed out. Anyone out there know of a replacement battery that will not put me in the poor house.

Interesting, I have never seen a battery with a second smaller electrical connection that I remember, unless on test and I have been to most manufacures in the US at one time or other. I have seen batteries with cooling connections but these are traction batteries. Are you sure that it is for a senser? It could be a lower voltage for something. Some large equipment run dual voltage systems for starting and onboard electrics? I boggles the mind why you would need it on a small tractor. I guess it means the system is unique an you can charge 7 times the price for a regular battery.
If the system is 6/12 or 12/24 volts then you could look into running two batteries if there is room.

I seems to me that this connection would have to be for a temperature or electrolyte level sensor. Could this be a gel type of battery or does it have liquid electrolyte in the cells. If it is a gel type of battery sensor could be for temperature sensing to cut the charging current down if the battery starts to get hot. The gel type of batteries I have dealt with will not accept as high of a charging current as a liquid electrolyte battery. I would think this would be covered in a service manual if you have one.

I have heard that electrolyte and maybe temperature sensors are fairly common on tractors manufactured for sale in some market areas other than N.A. Before doing anything, I would check to see if what ever it is is considered safety equipment in N.A. and inform yourself about any warranty or insurance or personal safety implications before disabling it.

I replaced my Ford 1710 battery with an automotive battery. I found one that is a decent fit for the compartment and has adequate AH and CCA specs. I never really considered a replacement NH battery. Batteries can't be shipped here and it's a long drive to my NH dealer.

There are issues of possible overflow and venting of corrosive fumes discussed here awhile back and you should be aware of possible damage to the tractor from adapting anything that isn't a factory replacement.

This is a electrolite level sensor. The battery from the manufactor is listed 364.00. Just wondering if anyone found one that was cheaper with the sensor.

If you read between the lines of what slowrev said. The answer is no you can not in NA and you could replace with a gel or glass mat value regulated lead acid battery and not need the sensor at all. These batteries are a lot more robust in high vibration areas than normal lead acid batteries.

Why can't you use a regular $50 battery and forget about the sensor?

Many of the 3-cylinder Yanmars have battery electrolyte level sensors and a corresponding light on the dash. We replace them with a similar size automotive battery and disable the light. Not a big loss of information, especially for the $300 difference in battery cost!

I believe we replace those with a group 2472 battery at about 60. dollars. These are a diesel tractor battery and they don't use the wire. Just leave it taped with electrical tape on the end off to the side.
