I just bought a Kubota L2800 with Land Pride RTA1550 tiller
With the depth skid shoes set in the lowest position the max I can till is 5 " which seems shallow- the plane of the tiller is level as specified in the manual. Any ideas'on how to till deeper ?? I was hoping for at least 6 or 7 inches

Tractordude,
This is a common problem with tillers.
The depth will increase substantially on your second pass over the area, as the skid shoes will then sink into the earth you previously tilled up, rather than ride over the sod.
There's nothing wrong with your tiller. In fact, you have a very good one. The problem is with the skid shoes coming in contact with firm sub-soil or sod, preventing them from sinking into the ground any further.
I prefer to till up the area at least twice. The more you work the soil, the deeper your tiller will go. I'm now down to about 7 inches, after the third pass over the area.
Hit it again. You'll notice a big difference the second time over.

Tractordude; Jeff hit it right, you need to go over it twice. My tiller is a Landpride RTA 1558 probably real similar to yours only a tick wider. I don't know if there really is a preferred depth, I think it depends on the soil conditions. I try to keep it at about 3-4 inches the first time over them go a bit deeper, probably 5-6 inches the second trip. I also go a bit slower the second time over, that seems to give the soil that fluffy look, soft as a pony's nose. Frank. ....

Tractordude,
I forgot to mention that it works best to overlap the previous pass about a foot.
Your skid shoes are located outside of the tiller's cutting path. Therefore, there's a strip about 4 inches wide that doesn't get tilled up.
If you overlap about a foot on the second pass, your skid shoes will sink into the tilled soil, and your tiller will cut into the area that was previously missed under the skid shoes.
You'll find that as you begin to work deeper, your tiller will have a harder time discharging the soil out of the rear. You may see the soil begin to pile up in front of the tiller. You might find that the tiller works better with the rear gate open a bit further as you begin to work deeper into the soil. My King Kutter II has an adjustable rear gate. I just shorten the chain up a link or two when working deeper.

Thanks Joel
I think the overlap may be the key. I did run over it 2-3 times but it was always in the same path. It did increase depth but not much. It did till it up real fine which was good but just wanted it deeper so I will try overlap and see. Thanks ....
