My 4100 HST missed and smoked excessively on a cold start. The book just says to turn the key to on, check your guages, and crank. The dealer checked the glow plugs and relay and all were working normally. John Deere was contacted, and I was told to put the range lever in High or Low, hold the key in the crank position for 10-15 seconds, turn key off, then put the lever in Neutral and start the engine. It starts perfectly every time no matter how cold and NO SMOKE or MISSING! I hope this helps other 4100 owners.

I beleive that is what is happening,, the glow plugs don't work unless you have the key switch in the "crank" position, and by putting it in gear it allows the glow plugs to heat up without turning the engine over.

I was told to turn the key on 4100 and wait until I heard two clicks. It takes about 5 seconds to get the second click, and you can see the idiot lights flicker as you hear the clicking. Then engage the starter. Starts every time.
Do you guys have the same set of clicks if you turn the key to the last stop before the starter motor engages? ....
