JD4320 vs Kubota L5240 -- question about lift capacity

Hey friends,
I'm looking at getting either a John Deere 4320 with a 400CX loader (48 hp) or a Kubota L5240 w/ LA854 QA 72" loader (54 hp). I'm leaning toward the Deere because of ease in removing the loader/bucket, and because I prefer its controls and the way it drives. Also, the Deere guys will come out to the farm if there's ever a problem I can't fix. Prices are comparable.
Here's my question: The stated lift capacity for the Deere is 2194 lbs; for the Kubota, 2489 lbs. The Kubota dealer says all lift capacities are unrealistic and the L5240 can only lift about 1800 lbs, including the bucket. The Deere dealer says Deere's stated lift capacities are more accurate.
I'd like to be able to lift and move around a 1-ton silage bale: Kubota dealer says no way, even though it's a bigger tractor; Deere dealer says no problem.
What do you all think? Is the Deere dealer on the level?
Also, any other thoughts on advantages/disadvantages of either tractor would be much, much appreciated.
Thanks!

JD4320 vs Kubota L5240 -- question about lift capacity

Gulogulo,

Lift capacities are usually determined by taking a reading from two different places.

The further out in front you go, the less you'll be able to lift. Therefore, you'll find two separate lift capacities stated.

The first lift capacity is measured at the lift pins. This stated lift capacity is very unrealistic, as very few people will attempt to lift or carry anything at that point on the loader.

The more important lift capacity figure comes at 24 inches ahead of the lift pins...........or at about the center of a pallet that you'll carry on a set of bucket forks. This is the figure that you'll need to worry about when attempting to lift a heavy bale of hay.

I can't tell you whether or not the John Deere dealer is pulling your leg. I can, however, tell you that the L-series Kubota tractors are not capable of lifting a ton on a set of bucket forks.

Hope this helps.

Joel

JD4320 vs Kubota L5240 -- question about lift capacity

Gulogulo,

Kubota states the lift capacity at the loader pivot pins as being 2489 pounds. They do not state the lift capacity at the center of a pallet, when on the loader forks.

Interestingly enough, the Kubota site also states the lift capacity of John Deere's 400x loader (mounted on a John Deere 4720) as being 2346 pounds at the pivot pins.

It should be noted here that neither tractor/loader combo would be capable of lifting a bale weighing a ton.

Even if either tractor/loader combo would be capable of lifting a bale weighing a ton, you'd be at the very limit of your tractor's capabilities.......meaning that it would be very unstable on rough ground.....such as hay land.

In order to be on the safe side, you'll need a tractor capable of lifting much more than just one ton.

Joel

JD4320 vs Kubota L5240 -- question about lift capacity

Thanks Joel -- that is extremely helpful. Maybe I don't need silage anyway. Would you say that either tractor would be capable of lifting a regular round bale of, say, 1400 lbs?

JD4320 vs Kubota L5240 -- question about lift capacity

Gulogulo,

Yes. I believe either tractor would be capable of lifting 1500 pounds, quite safely.

You'll likely want liquid-filled rear tires, and you may also want wheel weights or ballast weight on the three-point hitch in order to remain stable on rough ground.

Oh....by the way.....check out Kubota's quick-tach loader system. On and off the tractor in a flash. I think you'd like it. I have no experience with John Deere's loader attachment system, but I can tell you that Kubota's system is very good.

Joel
