 Deere 790 Pricing

I am looking to buy a Deere 790 with a 60" finish mower, front blade, chains, wheel weights, turf tires, with 4WD. What is a good price for this?

I purchased a JD 790 back in May. It has 4WD, turf tires and loader valving. The price was $11,400. I have about 50 hours on it so far and love it. I did get a 60" finishing mower for $969, 5' rotary cutter for $495 and a 50" tiller for $1,400. Hope this helps.

My finishing mower is a King Kutter FM-60. It has a full free floating deck (has 4 wheels), front anti-scalping roller, 40HP gearbox, 3/16" deck and self tightning belt. Cuts very good even on unlevel ground, hills and dips. Since I bought the tractor at the same time, my dealer gave me a good price.

I am shopping for a 790. Up here in Upstate New York it can get cold in the winter. The dealer tells me a block heater is not really needed. My thinking is that if it won't start, my expensive tractor is worth nothing. Has the technology really come that far so a block heater is not necessary when it gets -10F?

Hmmm, I find that the "preheater" run for 20 seconds, and then full throttlle turn the key to start, and it starts right up just fine (although I think it has only been in the mid to high teens so far this year, yesterday being one the colder days of the year. Anyway, my 790 starts just fine in the cold, I find of thought the idea of the preheater was to eliminate the need of a block heater. I also start my machine every other day just to make sure engine oil and hydro fluids have a chance to loosen up and keep all those little parts lubed nicely.

I paid 14,900.00 for 790 4wd/mid and rear pto/70 loader ballast box. Love the machine, have no regrets so far.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Dave, I cannot understand your dealer's motivation. So what if it will start without a block heater in the bitter cold? Who cares? Surely he will agree that a warm engine starts easier, has better lubrication, and better clearances (less wear) than a cold one. And that this also applies to the hydraulic system.
IMHO, not having a block heater for cold weather is poor mechanical practice. And they are dirt cheap. I don't think that I've ever seen one that went fifty bucks installed. Maybe the green-painted ones would be slightly more Smile, but I doubt it. If you don't use it, it does absolutely nothing in the tractor - pro or con. It's just there if you want to use it.
I have never heard anyone argue against a block heater in any way. Even the sealing system for the thing is better than the freeze plug that it replaces.
Roger L.

Dave
It really depends on the fuel system, age of the engine, The air heater is good but no substitute for a block heater. I am from Washington states east side and have been a diesel mechanic for some time. Cat, Cummins, Detroit, International and all the rest start better these days but a block heater is so much cheaper than a burned up starter, and the anxiety a no start situation can cause. Just don't run the engine with the heater plugged in. Use a timer to heat or turn on before you figure you will need it. I went on many of road calls in 15 years trying to start this stuff. Block heaters are cheap.
John
