Reverse does not work

I bought a 2007 John Deere LA110 and I have never figured out how to use reverse. It says in the manual to press in and hold the RIO button and then slowly press the gas pedal. The tractor always goes forward. Is there something I am doing wrong or is there something I need to check or adjust?

When you say ".....slowly press the gas pedal. The tractor always goes forward.".

Do you mean when you step on the 'reverse travel pedal' (the small one out near the edge of the floorboard) it goes forwards, or are you still stepping on the regular big horizontal pedal?
