My C174 is struggling to climb mild gradients and even on flat ground will not drive forward when put in HIGH range. It has a HydraStatic gearbox with just 3 ranges, High, Medium and Low. Even in Low range with the 4 in one loader and a carry all tray on the back but with no other load it cannot climb a very mild gradient that I feel it should be able to do.
Am I asking too much?
Thanks for any help!

The engine maintains power and revs but the tractor just stops moving forward as if the gearbox or clutch is slipping.
The workshop has told me the head gasket on the engine needs to be replaced and this could be the cause but I am sceptical as the engine seemed to be running fine except sometimes a bit hard to start when cold.
It is due back at the end of this week and then will see what happens.
Anyone have any idea what the recommended grade of gearbox oil is?

Thanks ....

The sympton you describe is from a slipping clutch. It has nothing to do with a head gasket/ Use universalhydraulic/transmission fluid = toor better thanJD303. ....

From anothe rmessage board , I see that this is a hydrostatic tractor. I believe ther is a hydraulic pickup screen & a tranmission screen. If cleaning them doesn't help then you probably have hydro problems , which can be expensive. ....

For those people that offered advice thanks.
The tractor is back from the workshop and has no problems with drive now.
They found a damaged impellor in the transmission oil pump and once this was replaced all is fine.

Thanks again ....
