I have a 59 Ford 801 Diesel and have been having starting issues. Last year it wouldn't turnover so I replaced the solenoid. Pushing the starter switch had no effect, so I have been jumping across the two small terminals to start the tractor. Last week the starter died and I have replaced it and it srarts great, but I still have to jump across the small terminals.
I have battery voltage across the two small terminals. If I disconnect the starter switch and press it, I have continuity to ground.I was having intermittent problems with the key switch,so I replaced it today. Still won't start by pressing the starter switch.
I'm confused as to what exactly does the starter switch do by putting a ground on an already grounded terminal on the solenoid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thinking that the automotive solenoid was wrong, I picked up a solenoid from the tractor store and put it on----no change.

It would seem there must be an issue with the starter push button. If my memory is correct the push button completes the ground path which is what I understood from your post also. How about if you jump from that terminal on the push switch to the transmission plate it is on, will that complete the path and it engage starter? If so the issue is in the push switch. If not would suspect the wire to it is broken either fully or enough not to carry suffient load. You could try that by using jumper wire to run from solenoid to that switch. If not the wire then you could have another bad switch, or it might not be grounded as it should for some reason or the safety part that only allows it to work when in neutral is broken (no idea how it should look). If not mistaken it will only start in neutral but it has been a few years since cranked one. ....

Thanks for the reply. Turns out the proper solenoid for this tractor is an insulated one. My understanding of solenoids told me that they should be grounded thru the mounting bracket. Not so with this one----the ground is applied by the starter switch. Apparently this is not common. Never too old to learn something new. ....

I am not a mechanic, but I'll try and help.
Has your system been upgraded to 12 volts? Mine has. Over the years the wiring has been messed with by everyone who owned it before me.
That being said, I'll try to get pictures or diagrams of how mine is wired up.
I only use this tractor once or twice a year, so I'm not real familiar with everything on it. John.

It is 12 Volt system. Before I bought tractor all wiring was striped. The only wiring is for the starter and the glow plugs. The only way I can start is jump start at the starter. I really need help as when I install a solenoid it shorts out the solenoid out when I hit the starter switch. I feel like If I could properly wire the starter and solenoid it would fix the problem. Any help you can give I will try.
Thanks,
Odice ....

Hope this picture helps. Remember this solenoid gets it's ground from the starter button....NOT the mounting bracket of the solenoid.
My records say this is a NAPA ST85 ungrounded solenoid. The numbers on the side of it are 12v Echlin 1301 ....
