transmission fluid for my 2135 seems to be quite expensive. does anyone know of any less expensive substitutes?

Generally speaking any high quality fluid for hydrostatic drive units should be fine.

In our non-Kubota units we use Case-IH Hy-TRAN fluid and have never had a problem.
