I know that my Kubota and my John Deere manuals both recommend not letting it idle for long periods. There reasoning is mainly for the lack of cooling when it is idling, especially at very low RPMs. And for the obvious wasted fuel. Starting the newer diesels is so easy now it is hard to justify idling them.

It may not be related but I had a similar experience with my 4100 when I was actually at the dealer getting a mower adjusted. It would no longer start. They checked everything for two hours and finally stumbled across the computer module that needed to be replaced. No it was nothing simple and there was no reason for it to happen.

I just purchased a King Kutter 72" rotary mower for my Kubota L4310. The interesting thing is that, once the mower gets going, there is so much mass that it sounds like a helicopter and not much slows it down. I doubt you would have any trouble with your setup. However, in case you aren't aware, King Kutter has the worst documentation I have seen so don't expect any advice on using it or maintaining it.

That sounds like it is working correctly. I have a JD and a Kubota. The differential only locks when it is held down and releases when you release it. Sometimes you have to wait a few seconds for it to engage but you should feel it drop easily when it does. Also, the Kubota manual specifically states you should never turn when it is locked.

OK. I now have a 6' rotary mower on my Kubota L4310. I have never used one before and since it is a King Kutter, the instructions are useless. Should the single rear wheel touch the ground when cutting? Should the mower be supported almost totally by the 3-point hitch? I seems rather bouncy that way and will cut divots quickly if I am not careful. Any other clues would be helpful. Thanks.

I agree about the front tine tiller unless you don't want to go to the YMCA that weekend. They are a challenge. I have a rear tine, counter rotating one that is a pleasure compared to it but they start around $500 for a cheap one. We just recently bought a 5' 3point tiller and, well, the rear tine tiller won't be used anymore.

One piece of advice I will give you is to watch the hydraulic line just above the midmount mower (when you get it). If you haven't mowed in awhile, the grass will be long and usually you raise the mower to be able to cut it more easily until it is manageable. When you do this, the mid-PTO shaft rubs on the metal line and wears through it. The John Deere fix is to have the dealer adjust it so you can't raise it very high! You may not notice this if the dealer does adjust it since you don't know how high it should go but the extra inch or so can make it much easier to cut through the tall stuff. It is another example of poor engineering but they are unwilling to reroute the line to give proper clearance. They will replace it though when it wears through. Other than that, I have been pleased.

I think one of things that you pay for when you get the higher priced implements is proper assembly and instructions. I have the King Kutter 5' tiller and I am not sure what language the instructions were supposed to be in but it wasn't the English I knew. Speaking of crankcase oil, they said to fill each crankcase 1/3 full. On one there is a drain plug that I believe is set at 1/3 but on the other there was no way to measure it except with a stick in the crankcase. Does anyone have experience with this?

The question of modifying ROPS and the liability has nothing to do with how well it was made or your abilities. It has to do with how much money you have. If you have a mortgage and a few implements and sell a defective product maybe you would get fined but no lawyer would touch the case unless your insurance covers it. If you have some properties free and clear and are "rich", then you pay for it to be done "right".

Ah, you have obviously run into the old "big enough" problem. I have a JD 4100 which is great for light work and easy to transport and easy on the turf and very maneuverable. However, when using a 5' tiller, it can do it but lacks the power to do it easily. I thought about going to one of the somewhat larger 4000 series but none would be big enough to handle a tree planter that I needed to use. So instead I am getting a Kubota L4310 in addition to the 4100. Of course it is too big to cut lawn easily and harder to transport but I obviously have the best of both worlds, if you can afford it. No matter what size you get, there are compromises. Bigger is not always better. I wanted to upgrade my Bobcat to handle larger implements but then I realized the weight was so great I would have to get a bigger trailer, bigger truck, commercial driver's license, etc.

Is it a gear or hydro? I have one with a 54" mower. The 60" was probably heavier duty but cost considerably more. How well does the loader work? I have been interested in getting one to do light duty jobs.

I paid $13,500 for the 4100 4wd hydro and DSCV so if you have the 4wd and DSCV you are getting a good deal.

I have used those repair kits on tractor tires and they work very well. As long as it is rubber and not high pressure it should work on any type of tire.

I may have said this before, but the lower 4000 series has apparently had the axles replaced already but the 4600 has not. They are still working on it. My dealer sells both John Deere and Kubotas so they are not biased unless they make more money on one or the other.

Yes, that answers it. That was my assumption but I wasn't sure and didn't want to ruin something. When I ask the farmers around here they just give you a funny look and say that's how they've always done it, right or wrong.

Someone mentioned that you can get stuck if you aren't careful with the post hole digger. Speaking from experience, I was using my Bobcat and trying the post hole digger for the first time and drove it down 48" pretty easily. And then realized that I couldn't get it back up or move it at all. I was scared until I called the dealer and found out that on the Bobcat (fortunately), you can run the auxilliary hydraulics in reverse and I unscrewed it easily. But it would have been major work if I had to dig it out by hand. So with a three point one, go slowly and keep backing it out.

Thanks Terry. Could I asked what you paid for it (with a breakdown of costs if possible)? The dealer wants $21,500 for the 4600 with 4WD, HST, DSCV and insdustrial tires and folding ROPS. I would assume from what you said that if it has been built already, it has the old scuffing problem.

What can the 4100 handle in terms of rotary cutters and tillers? I was told about 4' on both. Does anyone have any experience with the King Kutter brand and size? I will do cutting mostly high grass and weeds at times. Thanks.

I would say it is a little high, mainly because he has no transportation costs. As I said, I paid $1800 for at least 1/2 acre but probably 1/2 the depth and they had to travel a long ways with a huge trailer to move the equipment. I would certainly get a few more bids, at least for peace of mind. I don't begrudge them their money since the equipment costs so much but don't overpay.
