Has anyone ever used one of those 1 row 3pt cultivators? Quality has the King Kutter model CV-1-C for $130. It only weighs 100 lbs, so I'm wondering if it's heavy enough to do any good. I was going to buy a $300 front tine roto-tiller, but everyone tells me it will beat me to death, plus they don't look very sturdy. I remember my Dad had one when I was a teenager and I used it, but I don't remember if it was that much of a pain to use or not. So, I'm wondering if it would be better to get a one row cultivator to use until I can afford a good quality rear tine tiller.

Danny, I'm not familiar with the model you're talking about, but I have a 3-point cultivator plow from Tractor Supply, came with 6 of what I call chisel plow tips and I replaced them with 6 field sweeps. I don't really think too much of it, but it does get the job done fairly well. However, I have a couple of pieces of railroad rail that I tie on top of it to add another 110 pounds or I think it would be worthless. ....

Danny, I don't know anything about 3pt hitch cultivators but I do know about front tine tillers. No one should ever be sentenced to operating a front tine tiller. Unlike you I do remember my days as a teenager and running my Dad's tiller. It required boots with a good grip and a 45 degree body angle just to hold the thing back. While maintaining the 45 degree body angle you also had to pull up on the handles to get the thing to dig in. Save your money and your back. Buy a 3 pt. tiller even if you have to save for a while. ....

I agree about the front tine tiller unless you don't want to go to the YMCA that weekend. They are a challenge. I have a rear tine, counter rotating one that is a pleasure compared to it but they start around $500 for a cheap one. We just recently bought a 5' 3point tiller and, well, the rear tine tiller won't be used anymore. ....

Yes I have a king kutter 1-row cultivater,I put 4 sweeps on the out side ones & I still run the points on the 2 inside ones so I don't tear out my row. I like how it works, It does a good job for me. I have mine set close in the middle so I have to go real slow so I can watch every thing at once. Adjust the top link so the cultivater is level and it sucks it's slef into the hard ground with problem. As deep as I use it I'm suprised I havent broke a shank yet. ....

Thanks for your replies. A couple of you mentioned using a 5' 3pt tiller. I can see where they would do a great job as far as getting the garden ready for planting. But, once the garden is planted they can't be used unless you space your rows 6' apart, right? The cheapest one I can find is $1100 (for King Kutter at Quality Farm & Fleet). Does anybody know of any cheaper ones?

Danny, you hit on the problem, all right. When I had the B7100 and bought the RTS40 3-point tiller, they were both 40" wide, so I planted my rows 5' apart and could till between them. Now that I have the B2710 with an outside tread of 54", I planted the rows 47" apart and use the cultivator plow. I have the tiller offset to cover the tracks on the right side only for getting the garden ready to plant. ....
