Cpt. Dave - Don't hold me to this, but I believe the hour meter works essentially the same as an odometer on a car. The hour meter numbers increment at a rate relative to the rpms. When running at rated PTO rpm, the hour meter will increment 1 hour in 1 hours real time. If you are running at less than rated PTO rpm, the hour meter will increment less than 1 full hour in 1 real hours time.<br>
Since your tach works and the hour meter doesn't, it sounds like a problem in the meter. <br>
By the way, mine has 2100+ hours and is still working. Both the tach and hour meter quit last year because of a broken cable. Replaced that and all is fine.

Joe-Tractors are protected from the implements by either a shear bolt or a slip clutch. Seems implements that are larger and/or require more power and/or a little more expensive tend toward the clutches. Here is a link to a basic description.

My only comment would be to make sure you know what you are doing. We have been on a septic system for 18 years with never a problem. Our neighbors on both sides unfortunately can't say that. Their builder used the same septic contractor for both houses (we had a different builder and different septic contractor). They fought septic problems for years before finally hiring another contractor to come in and rebuild their systems. Very annoying to have a toilet that won't flush.

I do pretty much the same as you except I only move mine to between 1/4 and 1/2. Not aware that there is a problem with that method. I have to move mine since completely off shuts down the engine.

I am guessing that the person offering $400 is going to part it out. That will most likely bring quite a bit more than $400, but you have to be able to find those people needing the parts. OK for a salvage yard, probably not practical for an individual. A new engine would probably be more than the tractor is worth. A used engine will probably be hard to find. I have a 950 and have searched the web for a yard with used 950 parts and have not yet found one.

I bought a 1984 950 about 3 years ago. It has MFWD, PS, FEL, and 2040 hours. No ROPS (I added ROPS and canopy later). Good condition overall. I paid $8600 for it. From what I have seen since then, that is about average in price for that tractor. I think it will vary some depending on area.

The tach on my JD950 has 2 marks. One says "Rated PTO" which is about 2500 rpm (to give 540 PTO rpm). The other says "Max PTO". Like yours, mine will only run at rated rpm with the hand throttle at max. I think that is intentional so that the PTO runs at rated speed.

I don't know that you need to accelerate maintenance for that reason. I would go by the manual. It is no different than your car. Say you change oil every 5000 miles. Now if you drove exclusively highway during one 5000 mile period and averaged 60 miles/hr, that would be 83 hours engine run time. If,however, the next period of time you drove exclusively city and averaged 30 miles/hr, that would be 167 hours engine run time. In reality, you would average somewhere in between.

Here is a web site showing lots of pictures of different types trailers. Generally a "car hauler" trailer is one without raised rails around the sides and front. A utility trailer has either pipe or angle iron rails. There are pictures of both here, click on car hauler or on tandem axle. I prefer the utility type for tractor and implement hauling. I don't know anything about this manufacturer or their prices.

Mark is absolutely correct. I wasn't clear in my statement. I didn't mean to imply that you adjust the front to determine how high you cut the grass. I meant you adjust the 3PT to get the front of the deck to a near level position. You do first adjust the rear wheel to the cutting height you want.

Tom described it's uses very well. But put very simply, it replaces the standard top link so that you can adjust it from the seat with a control valve.

I run a 6' rotary cutter (brush hog) behind by JD 950 with 27 PTO hp. I would consider that at the low end for a 6 footer. It does fine as long as I don't let the grass get too tall. If I get into heavy green grass a foot tall or more it really has to work. I get thru it ok, just have to really slow down a lot. If I keep it mowed down , then no problem.

I am also looking at purchasing one. From all I have read, there are light duty models from places like Tractor Supply that apparently work well if you soil is not rocky. If it is rocky, you need a heavier duty model. Light duty cost about $400 for the drive unit + about $100 to $150 per auger bit (sold separately). Augers come in 6", 9", 12" and larger. Heavy duty drive units + an auger push $1000 or more.

SELou - If you are still looking for a pull behind, I happen to stumble across this site. It has Howse pull behinds with the rear wheels centered on the rear deck to prevent scalping. Pulls like a trailer. Might be just what you need.

I use a Howse 6' rotary cutter that I bought about 3 years ago for about $500. I mow mostly pasture but sometimes down by the creek I cut hardwood saplings about 1" dia and cedars (junipers?) 3' to 4' tall with no problem. Some people knock Howse but it has served me well. Howse has 4 levels of cutter, light, medium, medium-heavy, and heavy duty. Mine, I believe, is light duty. But it is as heavy as I want to drag around. I do know it has a 45 hp gearbox. I have 27 PTO hp so a good fit.
