Jeff, I'm not familiar with the other brand and models mentioned, but I used to have a Bush Hog SQ48 (when I had the little B7100) and my cousin now has an SQ600 (behind a New Holland TC29D). I guess you know the Squealer series Bush Hog is considered to be their "light duty" models; however, both the one I had and the one my cousin has have cut 2" saplings with no problems. They're tough. Like Dana said, the heavier the better. I'm now using a Howse 500; traded up in size, down in quality when I bought the B2710. It's quite satisfactory for what I need it to do, and it was cheaper, but isn't the quality of a Bush Hog.

I noticed that my new 4 WD 790 is leaking oil (or hydraulic fluid). On closer inspection I found that it's weeping out of a round threaded hole (about 5/16" dia) on the front of the rear axle casting about two inches below where the brake rod enters the casting. There is the same hole on both the right and left sides of the axle casting.My dealer said he wasn't sure what the holes are for so he phoned JD's service tech line. They told him that he should just plug them so he did. I'm a little nervous because nobody seems to know why the holes are there and they are possibly just taking the easy way out. Does anyone see holes as I've described on the axle casting of their 790? Are they open or plugged? Do they have a vented plug?

Bob, the #1 or #2 refers basically to whether the fuel was formulated for cold weather starting ease, with #1 being easier to start in cold weather. Technically, #1 has a higher Cetane Number, which is the opposite of Octane rating, the higher Cetane Number fuel being easier to vaporize and ignite. Fuel purchased at a station will automatically be blended for the geographic area and time of year. The red die is to help catch people who buy fuel sold "for offroad use only", then procedd to use it for over the road vehicles. I believe the main difference is whether or not the road taxes were paid, although the blending might be slightly different, f'r instance all diesel sold for highway use must have less than .5% sulphur content, etc. I don't know if the die affected your burner, and more importantly, how it might affect a fuel pump, but it's NOT SUPPOSED to, ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT. As for which to buy, buy the one being sold ! (grin) Seriously, it will be blended correctly for your area, and should work the best. A lot of folks around here use fuel oil instead of buying diesel, and it does work, although I notice that their tractor smokes more than mine, and the oil seems to turn black quicker. Unless you're using a lot of diesel, my feeling is pay a little extra and don't worry about what dies, stale fuel, or lack of additives might be doing to your tractor!

I have a 4100 and wondering if there is a disc anyone could recommend,and how many weights to use with it.Also, how about any aftermarket 60 in. belly mowers for this J.D.?Prices would also be appreciated.

Dave,

The most common way of adding rear ballast to the tires is as you described it. I suppose some folks to put in tubes, especially if they are worried about puncturing a tire, since it supposedly makes it a little easier to repair the hole.

Having said that, let me give you some other thoughts:

I have a JD 4100Hydro with R4 tires w/Ballast, no tubes. I use it for EVERYTHING, from mowing to loading, and hopefully will be putting a backhoe on this year (either a Kelly or a JD, if their's is for real). The ballast does help significantly with the ride, but I STILL need a rear ballast (weight) box for safe loader use, ESPECIALLY when using the pallet forks. According to JD's operator manual, I need approx 780 lbs in addition to rear tire ballast. I now have a ballast box (3PT hitch mounted), and I'll be removing the tire ballast this year, because the extra weight does compact soil when mowing. My point is, try to determine if you're gonna have to get a ballast box anyway, and if you are, you may want to forgo the rear tire ballast. It's a lot easier to take off a 3PT implement than to suck ballast out of the tires !!!

I hope that helps - at least confuses on a higher plane !

Todd, even without position control, the implement is not necessarily all the way up or all the way down. It's just that the control lever is centered and when you push it forward, the implement starts down and will continue down until you move the lever back to the center, and vice versa to raise it. So you can stop it wherever you want to; it's just that it's a little hard to fine tune because it may move up or down faster than you want, whereas with position control, you move the lever to the level you want and it stays there while the implement rises or falls to that level and stops.

There isn't really any choice for what you are doing. Those old Fords are wonderful to look at... and with low weight and wide stance they make a great platform for backhoeing. The 8Ns never did handle a loader very well; they are balanced as a 3pt and pulling machine.
And if you are building anything, the tool you will get the most use out of is the front end loader. You will be using the FEL all day every day for more chores than you would ever believe. So I think you will want to go with the tractor that has power steering, 4wd, and a much nicer front end loader. I can guarantee that your back will thank you.
The 8N makes a great complement to a compact tractor. I Hope you do get a chance to own one someday. A prettier tractor has never been built, and that little gas engine just purrs.

Well, clay, after weeks of researching different kubota dealerships and with some help from the fellas here at the ctb, I found out that the jerk was being caused by by an excessive amount of spring pressure inside of the two hydraulic valves located underneath the plastic cover beneath the seat (one for forward, one for reverse). My dealer at first was unable to figure out the problem, but after prodding their local rep., decided that each of those springs needed to be shortened by 1 turn. We had a heck of a time getting the one plug out of the valve because paint had ran down inside... I ended up taking the whole valve to work and tapping a small 4-40 hole about .100" deep in the plug and making a small puller out of a 4-40 screw and some tiny washers. When we finally got the valves apart and cut the springs, we found that no real change occurred in how the transmission acted. To sum it all up, the rep finally told us that if all else failed, to just take the springs completely out. So that's what we did and the thing works just as smooth as glass now. I think I understand the theory behind the springs and why the valves are even there... to have a "creeping" mode and a traveling or pulling "mode".... but we never could get them adjusted right, so now, basically the tractor is always in traveling mode... but with as smooth as the pedal is, you would never think it should be any different than it is right now. It wasn't a problem that would ever have hurt anything or damaged the internals of the tractor in any way, it was just a little uncomfortable. And it definitely wasn't enough of a problem to ever make me think that I didn't buy one of the best and well built tractors on the market.

I plan to buy a box scraper this spring and trying to decide if I want to get a rollover box scraper or a conventional one. I'd appreciate any and all opinions on the merits of both types, especially from folks who have used them both. My tractor is a 35 hp JD4400 with turfs and a loader. My soil is well-drained, but has a significant clay base and is embedded with glacial till, that is, rocks varying from pea gravel to boulders the size of major appliances. Over time I want to grade and landscape about 4 acres of the old fields/pastures around the house we recently built for a "lawn" and open meadow. I also want to excavate for and finish grade a crushed-stone driveway and parking area. My plan is to get a fairly heavy-duty unit just wider than my tractor tires (65 or 66"). I expect that I would make use of the scarifiers quite a bit, especially with the rocky soil. Should I get a wider box like 72"? How big and heavy a box can my tractor handle? There are some box blades with hydraulic scarifier retraction, but they are ~1000 lbs and are indicated for 40-65 hp tractors. The rollover boxes look interesting to me, but I don't even know how expensive they are yet. Lend me your thoughts and opinions please.

David, I am not sure what you mean by quicktach plates? I have fabricated my own quick tach implements. What I do is take a pipe, 1 1/4" ID, cut it in half(half circle) and weld it to my implement so it cradels the round rod at the top of the loader arm quicktach and then reinforce with an extra piece of 1/4" plate over top just like on the buckets. Easy to do and works well. I made a set of forks like this and have had no problems with it even when having enough weight to make the back of the tractor "uncomfortably light". Am making a loader mounted snow plow right now the same way. I found that you can buy the bottom pins to weld on from JD, but they cost $10 a piece. I prefer to go to Tractor Supply and buy thier bolt on pins for $2.00. They are pretty close in diameter.

I don't know a lot about HST's. However, I believe a HST runs off a different pump than the tractor hydraulics. Most HST's have filter screens that have to be cleaned periodically. It sure would be nice if simply cleaning a screen is the answer.

I just purchased an L295DT kubota.I was in the market for about 8 monthes and finaly settled on this unit. A year ago I built a house on five acres that has some pasture and alot of 1"-2" sapplings with brush. So far it has met or exceeded my performance expectations. This unit is 4wd and has a loader on it as well as the ROPS that the dealer installed for me.I also pull a 60" rotary cutter a scraper blade or a rake behind it. Today, at very low speed, I mowed down several 1.5"+ cottonwood sapling as well as tons of brush all under the mower at once! Kind of hard on the mower but that is what I bought it for.

I have to assume you have the quick-tatch system. I have a 4100 with FEL and midmount mower. Would the FEL interfere with the mounting system (obviously I know you couldnt have the blade on) and does it interfere at all with mower.

Although I did not mention it earlier, the cheapest solution for a portable tank is from an expired propane or refrigerant tank. All of my portable tanks but one are of this nature, in fact we have several which are expired 100# tanks, about 30 gal. equivalent. Remove the old valve (POL type) BLOW AIR THROUGh to remove any remaining propane, screw in the new valve (from any supply house or jobber, and away you go. I have even seen them with nothing more than a female quick disconnect screwed straight in, no valve at all. Cost, about $20.... value when you need it.... 'nuff said. Best of luck.

Your excitement is infectious! And Friday is only two days away.
I continue to get essentially the $21,000 prices in the area. It may be that I will have to just accept it if I want a dealer close enough to make the service easy. I have been tractor driving, and my wife has also been driving them. Together we are thinking of the TC40D instead. It isn't clear there is any meaningful differences, but it seems quieter to us. Let me know how it feel to have the tractor at home.
