Keith and Rick, What kind of tires do you have on your 4100? With AG tires there is no problem with the 3 pt rubbing, but with the industrial R-4 tires, mine would always either rub or be darn close when the hitch was raised up all the way. Reversing the wheels seemed like the only option for some implements. But I like the wider stance better anyway

My first time on and noticed the traffic on NorTracs. Been looking at/for compacts myself, and was curious as to the actual maker of these things. In my searching, I ran across the 'Allied' brand, and they look identical to the Northerns, except price. Search for 'Allied tractors' on the web and you'll eventually come up with at least two locations that sell and service the Allied version... I'm pretty sure they're one and the same tractor out of Singapore.....

As soon as I read your problem regarding left wheel bolts loosening I checked the bolts on my 4100. The bolts are tight but I do see the problem you gentleman are having with your 4300s. It is obvious to me why the bolts are loosening do to tire rotation "rocking" the bolts loose. The wheel does not fit "tightly" around the hub which results in ALL the wheel load and forces (torque) to be transfered to the bolts- each and everyone of them. Because of a less than tight fit between the bolt diameter and its respected hole- there is a tendency for movement- everso slight- back and forth- up and down. The bolt "sees" this action as an unstable situation and during some of the cycling it tends to tightened to the wheel but during the MAJORITY of the cycling it rotates the bolt in the other direction (loosens). I have seen this problem from lawn mowers to race cars to airplanes. Putting in a left handed thread would solve the overall debate of which direction the bolt wants to turn. The real solution would be to: (1) machine a wheel to hub adapter which allows a snug (or better yet a compression) fit to the hub as the wheel is drawn in. This transfers static load to the wheel and not the bolts. (2) A beveled headed bolt and mated beveled wheel bolt hole like FORD trucks use that keeps each bolt in constant center with the hole which in turn resists torsional forces from loosening them. Naturally JD will ultimately suggest "easy fixes until the warranty expires, then its up to you to solve the problem once and for all. In the mean time retorqueing fatiques the bolts not to mention deforming the softer hole threads.

From the 1998 Farm Equipment Guide Blue Book: the Case-IH 1130 compact utility was manufactured 1991-1994, was available in 2wd and 4wd, and has a mitsubishi K3G 3-cylinder diesel engine. The engine is rated at 20HP PTO. The transmission has 9 fwd/3 reverse and is synchronized.The 2wd unit weighs 1900 lbs and originally listed for $11,500. The 4wd unit weighs 2,050 and originally listed for $12,630. Average auction prices: (Low/High/Avg) - 2wd($3100/$5250/$4865) 4wd ($3164/$5823/$5345). Farmer, I don't do leaves because they are a pain in the butt. I leave them to the lawn care guys, it always has been part of the landscaping business that was too damn much of a hassle. You didn't say how big of an area you had and if you had a compact tractor, so what I have to suggest may be too intense for your needs. Some of my friends into the lawn and golf course trades have a nifty unit called the Buffalo Turbine Debris Blower. It requires 20 pto hp or better, mounts to your 3pt hitch, and has a remote control 360 degree nozzle. This is the most awesome wind machine I've seen since Al Gore and will blow away small dogs, cats, chimps, baboons,lots of rocks, sticks, Nash Metropolitans, and the occasional lion, tigre, or bear (oh my), not to mention leaves. It'll even blow down the brick house built by that smart-ass little pig. It aint cheap, and it is dangerous to use around any living thing, eye/ear protection is a must and the livestock should be well away when you use it. If the area you want to clear is small, like an acre or so, Echo and Stihl make darn good backpack blowers that are easy on the bod and do a pretty good job if you don't mind the walking.

That's a great point Roger. I think the burden actually falls on both, but the majority of it falls on the "expert" or the dealer in this case. Having spent my business life as the person recommending (20 years selling sailboat sales & the last 10 as a software consultant) I always felt it was my responsibility to recommend what was proper. However as you stated, if the dealer actually did believe in it, well, that is a different story. We as consumers also need to do our homework as Rod did by posting his question.

If your floobie dust and my floobie dust are the same, I think you may have hit the nail on the head since this is the same employee of the jd dealer that checked out the tractor for me and said it was in great shape and everything worked very well(floobie dust).

I'm not familiar with that particular tractor, and I think the other guys have already answered your question, but it may not be as bad as it sounds. I ran my B7100 out of fuel once myself, and a neighbor did it again, and both times I bled the injectors at all 3 cylinders by self in about 10 minutes and was going again.

Brent, Murf: Thanks for the note. Now that you mention it, when I think of a heavy loader, I do see cylinders outboard on the arms. As is often the case, cost is the explanation when something doesn't make a sense to me.

There are sprays sold in ag supply stores that leave a light grease coating on parts. I don't think use of them is necessary for hydraulic cylinder shafts, but I use them anyway, sometimes. I use my loader around highway salt slush, and there isn't any corrosion on the shaft ends that aren't retracted into the cylinders. If highway salt doesn't corrode them, I'm not going to worry about it much.

JD4600 w/48 backhoe here. I like my little 'hoe but don't confuse it with an excavator or a dedicated TLB like a Case. I used it clear about an acre of heavy Maine woods for a homesite and it works SLOW. Part of it is due to my inexperience and the other part is that these little backhoes don't have much weight behind them so it is easy to lift your tractor when you are trying to pull a stump. I have no problems at all digging holes or trenches but if you plan on stumping be aware that it will be slow going. At about 7 grand for the hoe it is pretty expensive. I would check out a Kubota L48 for about 40K, they are suppose to be pretty heavy duty, or just buy a beat up old yellow backhoe for 10k that will out dig and and out stump a compact by a factor of about 10.
