Yes, it is strange for this much snow here in southern MO. We got 14" of snow. But the little 4100 did just fine. In fact I was surprised that it chugged right through all that snow with turf tires.

Just one note of clarification, the 4100 hydro does not have a separate powersteering pump. It gets its flow from the Hydro tranny the same way the 55 series did. Whether this makes any difference or not I dont know.

Gentlemen, Thanks for all of your input. I have called around on prices for all of these suggestions and I've found the prices range from 1125.00 to 3000.00 depending on what you are looking for. With all of the recent snow we've gotton here in south east Michigan, I've been using my 60" loader with a 72 " adj. rear blade. I've found for the money I think I will continue to do it this way. Also, I think there are some benefits to having the loader as opposed to the blade. 1. I have appx. an 450' long drive which is wooded on both sides. This forces me to put all of the snow at only 1 end or the other. We've gotten appx 18-20" over the last week. Without the use of my loader, I would not have been able to get the snow in the large pile required to have it out of the way. 2. I have the R-4 Industrial ties with no chains. I've found in the deep snow once in a while I would get stuck. Using the loader on the ground to push myself back a few inches really helps. I have a friend who recently purchased a plow for his JD 4100 and has had to pull his tractor out with his truck. 3. Last but not least...The 72" blade really moves the snow! I turn the blade around backwards and angle it when I am on gravel so it doesn't pull all of the stone too. Also when it hit the ashphalt, I just plow in reverse. This really cleans well and I've seen as much as 3' of snow being rolled over by the blade. Thanks for all the input, and happy plowing!!!!

Re: 3ph backhoes. I think both Ted and Roger are right. I guess that's easy for me to say since I do own a 3ph hoe. If I used it extensively or in hard ground, I'd probably want a sub-frame mount. However, many sub-frame mounts compromise other tractor use. My hoe is somewhat undersized for the tractor and I think I use it well and safely. I do acknowledge the structural issues. I thought I'd say that my hydraulic setup reduces one of the most mentioned safety hazards (having the 3ph raise with an operator in the hoe seat). I feed my hoe from the first spool of a 3-spool control valve set for my loader. With that valve actuated, neither the 3ph nor the loader operate. For me to take a rapid ride into the ROSP, the bungee cord that holds the control valve open would have to fail. At the same time, the 3ph lever would have to be inadvertently left in a raise position. And, there would have to be a failure in the 3ph lock-down part of the hoe mount. It could happen, but it seems a pretty slim chance. I further reduce safety risks by checking the hoe mount every half-hour of operation or so. I worry more about breaking the tractor with the hoe.

Yes,you can engage and dis-engage the front axle on any B-Series,even the BX models.The bi-speed turn works very well,unlike the super-steer on the Boomers,which the whole axle pivets,the front wheels turn at faster speeds,independently,pulling the front end around,and making a shorter turn.Hope this doesn't sound like I'm bashing the Boomers,cause I'm not.I've heard nothing but good things about the Super-Steer option.

Bruce....Seat?? What?? Oh...I get it; I should have explained that once upon a time us old time motorcyclists used to refer to a sidecar as a "chair" or "hack". So there really wasn't an extra seat or chair to be built. Though come to think of it, I would lose this bet because now I remember that I did build a bench seat for my house using the lumber from the Velorex packing crate. Excellent full dimension 15/16" x ~6" hard pine of some sort. ...no, I'm not making this up, I just got up and measured the wood on that very bench. I still have it. You must be psychic or something. Have a very mental holiday!

I have used my Landpride 1572 RBT rear blade to remove snow on my gravel driveway, and really messed up the surface. I had new 1/2" gravel brought in about a month ago, which had not yet compacted very well or frozen to the ground due to very little moisture. The blade just tore up my nice smooth driveway. Because of the relatively short wheel base of compact tractors, this must be a common problem. Will skid shoes solve that problem? My dealer quoted me two Landpride skid shoes for around $ 200, which is unbelievably expensive. My idea is to buy some cheap large diameter air filled caster wheels and install them on the blade, which should work even better thab skid shoes. Has anybody ever tried that with good results? Do skid shoes or caster wheels make a difference on a rear blade for snow removal? Any comments welcome.

I've got quite a few aspen, douglas fir, and ponderosa pine....never have counted them, but there is a bunch. I've noticed that the young ponderosa pine in the Colorado mountains grow fairly thick and bushy for the first 15 years or so. When they decide to become a tree they shoot up and become more of a crown tree. The douglas fir are almost opposite. They like a little more water and shade than the ponderosa, which makes them end up competing for sunlight in the wild. Around here, young doug firs tend to be thin and spindly. Older trees can spread out and develop a a thick set of lower branches as long as they are not competing for height with other trees.
It depends on your climate. If you have sandy well-drained soil with lots of sun I'd try some ponderosa pine. They do best on a sunny hillside and tolerate crowding very well. Young ones seem to thrive on being overcrowded until they are maybe 10 years old and 6 or 8 feet tall. This compensates for any lack of lower branches.

For those of you who would like brighter headlights on your B series Kubota tractors Advance Auto parts stores carries a 35 watt and a 50 watt replacement bulb. I put a pair of the 35 watt bulbs in and it makes a huge difference over the standard 15 watt bulbs. The bulbs are Night Blaster part No. 702 for the 35 watt and 701 for the 50 watt.

The loader dropping while the tractor is sitting is not that much of a problem and depending on the compnonets used might not be able to be stopped. You would need a check valve control and it is not normally used in this application at all in the industry. When the tractor is running and the loader drops while you are watching it than you do have a problem.

Tom you are right that multi-weight oils do break down to the lower or base viscosity under hard use. I don't have any problems with it under normal operation of tractors or cars as long as it is a good oil to begin with. I do have my favorite's that I perfer in my toys and it is not synthetics. I do believe that they have some good products but I haven't played with them in a number of years.

Larry, I would be interested in hearing some details about your starting problem. I also have a new 4100.(delivered Jul 2000) Recently it has been stored outside under a tarp in -0 temps. Ran it yesterday. Started easy, worked the preheat cycle (3 sec each) 3 times before firing, just a wisp of smoke, and smooth idle. Throttle was just cracked open a little about 1/4 open When it was garaged it seemed to smoke more on startup. The book says to warmup at 1/2 throttle. Start at 1/2 to 3/4. Do you use that much throttle on startup?

my 1530 does the samething.mine's not the cable,but the friction disk in the throttle lever.it happened 3 years ago when it was brand new.i loosened the nut on the lever and it didn't help.that area of the tractor has no was for air to pass through it to help dry it out.it happened today to me when i tried to start it to put the blade on.(it was 6 degrees here in the st.louis area today and the weather man says 5 to 7 inchs of snow by tomorrow night.)anyway the way i can tell is when it warms up it gets a little foggy in the dash.to help with the problem i set the throttle at about 1000 rpm when i shut it off.when i start it backup its got enough to start but not enough to run to fast to hurt the hydro or hydraulic.hope this helps.good luck.

Birds right on that one the coating makes no difference as to the structual strength of the hitch ball. There are differences of the strength by the bolt diamiter and length.
