Dale, does that 855 have 4WD? I've used a 5' box blade in dirt behind a 16 hp tractor, so in some circumstances the 855 can handle it, but traction may be a problem with turf tires, especially if it doesn't have 4WD.

Cutter, You say the "capacity" is 7.5 gallons. Is that the amount required to do a standard oil change or the total amount the factory would install when the tractor is built plus filling all the hoses and cylinders of attachments at the dealership? The amount of oil required for initial fill is larger of course and you don't want it to be substantially larger. If it is, then you might want to try to at least drain as many hydraulic cylinders as practical.

I had thought of that myself, but if the thing is no deal I will buy a 7'. Why go through the time and aggravation of cutting, grinding and painting unless it is a couple hundred in savings. Froom what I have read here, sounds like it may be too large for a tc29 and not THAT great a buy.

Kenny, you were absolutely correct about the reg-gen circuit not coming on until you get past the half way mark when pushing the joy-stick to the right for dumping. This info is not in the tractor or loader operators manual. The shop manual (I have one) shows that JD uses two different SCV on the 70 series tractors, one with no regen (Japanese) and the other one having both a non-regen and regen capability (USA) built into the same valve. It does explain the difference nor does it say anything about the shift at the half way mark.
Bucket dump time using re-gen is about three time faster then no-regen.
There is an ever so slight detent at the divide mark when moving the stick to the right on dump, unless you know it is there you would not feel it. I have been using this loader for two years and never had a clue it was there.
The upside of all of this is that getting a 4 in 1 bucket plumbed in with a solenoid and thumb switch will be easy. I plan not to use the built in dump stop at first so that I can try for the best of both worlds. If I can't develop the right touch on the stick then I will go with the divider stop.

Roger, It is a matter of definition as you say. This is how I like to define "Made in USA:" If it has 2/3 US Content, then it is American made, otherwise it isn't. To determine content you almost have to have an inside track on where things are made, and how much do they cost. I own a '96 Honda Goldwing SE. These motorcycles are designed and manufactured in Maryville, OH. Only the transmission gears and some other low dollar items are made in Japan. The engine is made in Anna, OH. This bike is American made, and so is the Accord. Over 12,000 people are employed in those two areas of Ohio. Harley-Davidson is proud to be American, but the last time I had a number 17% of their machines were foriegn made. You figure it out. Final assembly has much less direct labor than making an engine, transmission gears, etc, so for my opinion, the 'ole JD955 is a Japanese tractor. By the way, 56% of all the manufactured goods made in our good ole USA are sold overseas. In any kind of embargo or tariff war we would be the biggest losers. Nuff said by me.

One of the Board members, Jack W. sent me a picture online of his heavy duty hitch. It looks like his has three additional unused holes in the links, or else they are some other kind of round feature. My links appear a little simpler. This may indicate a revision, or I'm not seeing it correctly.

Which reminds me of something I didn't notice before: each link has a spring anchor loop on each side of it. The outside loop is welded closer to the implement ball bushing than the inside one. The drawings in the parts book are correct in this regard.

I took a look at the leg length of each leg from the bend of the link. They are significantly different, and if the links were installed backwards the whole hitch geometry would be such as to make the hydraulic lift useless for normal implements. My links are installed so the short leg is connected to the tractor. The "lift link" on the left side is not adjustable as a heavy duty lift link is. Reversing the "link" would force you to use a hole that would lower the link level to a useless height.

The easiest thing for me to do at this point is to have an additional hole drilled in each link. Options: 1) find the engineer who had control of this design and tap his brain. 2) order a couple links to see what I get. I'm sure they would be a newer version.

I think what has happened here is that I've got the original links, and the sway chain and link designs have been revised without concern for the compatibility of the revised chains to the original links. It's happened before.

For what you described as your use I would get the HST trannie. The wet clutch would be better if you were going to have very heavy loads on the trannie for extended periods of time, such as plowing.

Regarding your question about snow blowing, I don't have a snow blower for my TC40D but have a walk behind snow blower. Based on how well that unit performs (8hp and 24" width) if you had a 72" inch blower it would only need 24 pto hp. Of course this can vary depending on the height of snow the blower can handle, how far the second stage blower is designed to throw, and how fast you would like to go. If you tend to have wet snow vs dry snow that will also make for a heavier load.

Roger nailed it. I have a JD 750, which is essentially a Yanmar. It's rated at 18-20 horsepower, and I do an INCREDIBLE amount of work with it. Ya just gotta take smaller bites. The only time I run out of tractor is when I'm trying to pull something really heavy. The JD just isn't heavy enough to put all it's power on the ground, and spins the wheels. I do post holes, rotary mowing, backhoe work, tilling, grading, log splitting, wood chipping and moldboard plowing with it, all with no problems. I originally bought it with a front blade for plowing snow, which worked okay, but was COLD! Swapped over to a bucket loader and that, as Roger said, is the single most useful attachment I own.

Do I care which one of these guys gets the office? Yeah . . . but it I don't think it will make much difference in the long run, at least I hope not. Then again, King George may succeed in turning the whole country into a Texas upsize, environment and all. Then again if George was the best candidate money could buy, Al bore was about the worst. sigh The situation kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson in that movie Mars Attacks. "We've still got one out of three branches of government working for us and that ain't bad." Then again the court system is becoming political and your chance of getting "justice" there is as good as your pocketbook. So what's my point? Where will we be when the majority of people lose confidence in the judical branch and become as cynical of it as they are of the executive and legislative? Give me gridlock and my morning paper. Thanks for the info. I guess my decision's made. I found a front blower for the 750 using machinefinder.com. The local dealers said it would be very difficult to find but I got lucky and found one in very good condition within 150 miles. Now I have to get the loader off, install the front PTO, put the blower on, and hope for enough snow to justify it all!!

I knew when I posted that message that I was forgetting one very important issue. "Complain and make it sound like a bigger deal than it really is" was that issue. I'm not saying that no one should purchase a JD4100 because I had a problem. I am saying that I had a problem with the JD4100 that I purchased and no one seems to care (other than me). To me $17K (total cost for loader, tractor, mower deck, ballast box, and a few other things)for a machine that does not perform without problems and warranty satisfaction is a big issue to me. I suspect there are a few other posters that have suffered far greater financial disappointments. Enough said on that topic. dsg listed several problems with the 4XXX series. I think he must have escaped the dash fogging problem. Obviously I am not going to receive relief from my dealer and I would like to know how much it would cost for a new set of injectors for the 4100 and how difficult it would be to install them. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the advice. After all you've said, I think I would feel more comfortable with the brakes hooked up and functioning. I don't tow any great distance, probably 10 miles maximum but I'd hate for my stupidity to cause someone else grief. I wouldn't be too happy if it caused ME any grief either. My truck is already set up with an electric brake controller in the cab as it was used to pull a 5th wheel. All I have to do is convert the 7-pin blade connector in the bed to a 6-pin and run it back to the trailer. I don't know what condition the trailer brakes are in but we will find out here shortly. Sounds like a nice piddling job for the Christmas season if the weather would just warm up a bit. That ground still gets mighty cold, even in Texas. Once again, thanks for the help and advice. I don't know what I'd do without this board.

We are a Cub cadet dealer and sell many compacts. The remotes are normally mounted at the rear of the tractor because that is the standard mounting location for almost all tractors. The remotes could be mounted at the front if new longer hydraulic hoses were made up from the valve to the remote couplers. The hyd valve gets its fluid supply from a hyd block on the side of the tractor that is intended for this purpose or to supply a loader. Details of connections to the block are described in the owners manual. Make sure your connections are correct before cranking the tractor possible damage to the hyd pump can happen if connections are made incorrectly.

If I understand, the 3ph doesn't work but the loader does, or some setup like that. I have basic open centre hydraulics, and the loader control valves are plumbed ahead of the 3ph. In this type of setup, the 3ph doesn't work when any of the loader control valves are operated. Sometimes it doesn't take much to keep the 3ph from lifting, at idle anyway. I've had situations where the 3ph wouldn't lift until I sat the loader bucket down and jiggled the valve levers. That's the simple 'no repair needed' explanation. Hope that's the one, but there are also plenty of 'broken part' explanations as well. I should note that my hydraulic oddities (valve jiggling wasn't the only one) occurred near a scheduled hydraulic oil/filter change. I bought the tractor used and decided to assume the previous owner changed the oil on schedule, and I could wait until the next scheduled change. However, I didn't really know how long the original oil had been used. I haven't noticed these oddities since changing the oil, which is a really good idea if there's any doubt about the oil and filter. I found a piece of rubber boot in the drain pan, and think it probably came out of the sump. Guess I'm lucky it didn't end up in the filter or obstructing the suction line.

Casey, I didn't know until a few years ago that there are so many varieties of blackberries. I have a list of at least 15 varieties. Our area has lots of the wild "dewberries" that most folks call blackberries, but the ones I take care of on my property produce berries that are 3 to 4 times as big, and much juicier than the wild ones (although I don't know the name of the variety I have). According to Texas A&M, blackberries have relatively shallow roots, so if you plow deep and/or keep them mowed down, they'll die out.

Unless you just want to mow grass, by all means buy a real compact tractor, even if it's a used model. The durability, performance and VERSATILITY of the compacts (any compact) cannot be matched by a top of the line garden trator. Garden tractors are always shown in sales literature with many available attachments. But performance is weak and the cost of these proprietary attachments is very high. With a category 1 3point hitch, you can buy a mind-boggling number of attachments from many sources and they will all perform on your compact. Also from a cost viewpoint, compacts will hold good value and utility for decades, long after the garden tractor is junk. I have a JD4100 and it was my first upgrade from the garden tractor. No comparison. Its a good homeowner's size compact with lots more ability than you could imagine. I would not hesitate to also shop the other brands, particularly the Kubota B-7500, or New Holland TC 18 or 21.

Art, I am in western NY. I haven't gotten any prices on the rims at all yet. I called one of the local dealers for a price amd he said he had another place he got the rims through cheaper and he would have them call me but that was a couple of months ago. I also could go the way Murf went and get some other rims that were the right size and have the bolt pattern altered to fit my tractor. I work in a machine shop so that is one way to go. Anyway if you come up with anything let me know........thanks Jim.

Todd, I am using a 3ph splitter I bought from Northern Tool and Equipment (formally Northern Hydraulics). They sell for just under $400, part number is 1172-C151 and it works very well. I would suggest that your main pump produce about 8 - 9 GPM or better though. My believe is that the hours most people put on a compact tractor will never wear them out, they can pass them to their children and then to their grandchildren.
