If I switch to a synthetic oil such as Amzoil, will it mix with what is left in the hyd. cylinders and lines ok, without causing problems, or must everything be bled? Plan on doing it this week. Thanks.

I recently switched the hydrostatic oil in my Steiner 430 to Amsoil ATH. The dealer said it was compatible with the original oil, but did recommend draining as much as practical from hydraulic cylinders on tractor attachments, steering cylinder, transaxles, etc. I followed his advice, and it took quite a while to get it all done. I removed all quick hose couplers and direct connections to the cylinders and then manually exercised them to pump out as much of the original oil as possible. Also flushed the transaxles twice. The end result was a very noticable and immediate reduction in the noise level from the hydro pumps and motors. For me that made it worth all the effort. It just stands to reason that the synthetic oil will perform closest to its optimum when it is not blended with the original oil. The volume of oil trapped in cylinders and lines may be quite high relative to the total volume of oil in the system. Some quick estimates for your particular tractor and the implements that connect to its hydraulics will give you some idea of whether a complete changeover is warranted. ....

Thank you Jack! My capacity is 7.5 gallons, so I would think the effect of the fluid left in the lines would be minimal. I will fully retract the cylinders to remove as much as possible and bleed where I can. I noticed the name is spelled Amsoil, not amzoil. My mistake, the s was backwardz. Cutter. ....

Cutter, You say the "capacity" is 7.5 gallons. Is that the amount required to do a standard oil change or the total amount the factory would install when the tractor is built plus filling all the hoses and cylinders of attachments at the dealership? The amount of oil required for initial fill is larger of course and you don't want it to be substantially larger. If it is, then you might want to try to at least drain as many hydraulic cylinders as practical. ....

The tractor manual calls for 7.5 gal. capacity. I assume that means to fill the supply sump of the transmission/hyd. as well as any the hyd. trans. may hold by itself. I doubt implements are figured in here. The capacity is found in the maint. section of the manual for servicing the filters ect.. I called around for the oil today and the N/H dealers don't carry it. Neither does the parts store. I found a garage that sells the product and he can order it in for 80-120 dollars a 5 gal pail. I can't find the ISO rating he is looking for, so I am not sure what to do. The N/H oil is 5w-30 I believe for their 200 petro. oil product. Nothing in the operators manual. Any ideas. Cutter ....

Cutter, Just bought 10 gal. of Amsoil ISO 46 Sae 30 Hyd&Trans fluid today. 3.15 per qt. This fluid has a pour popint of -70 below. Look in your yellow pages for a dealer in your area. Or call 715- 392-7101 for a dealer listing near you. If any problems let me know and i can check on it for you. gary ....
