I guess I just want to be sure that I am getting the best possible tractor for the money. I have heard of some problems with the 4000 series of JD's, but that those problems only apply to the 4200 and larger models. However, I have seen a few threads here at the ctb relating to hydrostatic tranny problems and some loader/hydraulic difficulties with the 4100. I wonder if those were just isolated incidences or if there is a real problem. There really isn't enough comment on them here at the ctb to really know. I guess that doesn't really affect me because I prefer the gear tranny, and I am not going to get a loader just yet. I don't really feel like financing another $2500. Oh yes, the price that I was given for the 4100 gear with a 54" belly mower and dual scv is $12,580.00 out the door with 8.9% JD financing. Does this sound like an average price for this setup?

Friends,<br>I have a new John Deere 4400 4wd hydrostat (80 hours),I was thinking about trading up to either the 4500,4600,or 4700.My understanding is(correct me if I am wrong)the JD4500 is not available in with hydrosatatic transmission.I do not plan to be running a baler,but I drag a lot of wood etc and would be only be using a roto tiller,bush hog and scraper blade and loader.The reason I am wanting to go to the bigger size,is for stability and more pulling power on heavy loads,not to mention a bigger loader to move more volume.I like the hydrostatic transmission on the 4400,is there any advantages over the different type of transmissions available,(which is the best to go with?)I want the AG tires for the aggressive traction.Would the 4700 be any better at pulling heavy loads and handling the loader,than say the 4600 or 4500,I know when it comes to pulling you are limited a lot by traction rather than power.And do the new 4500,4600,and 4700 have the new axle design?What is the price difference on the 3.I havent asked my dealer yet,thought maybe you tractor folks could help answer these questions.<br>Thanks in advance.<br>

Multi-viscosity oils were explained to me by a respected oil distributor as having pollimers(sp?)added to provide the characteristics of oils at both ends of the viscosity spectrum. The downside of the pollimers is that they are not lubricants, so any of them added to the oil are displacing lubricating oil. His statement was that it is better to stay with a single weight oil if you change to the proper weight as the weather changes. He also said that the wider the viscosity spectrum (ie 10w40 wt), the more pollimers have to be added. His opinion that a 10w30 was better if you use a multi-viscosity oil.

Of course, with the average vehicle owner unlikely to change oil with temperature changes, the advantages of the multi-viscosity oils being near the right viscosity for all seasons to get the oil flowing early to decrease startup wear is considered to outweigh the additional lube qualities of the single weights.

I checked out that discussion and it sounds very much like what is happening to me. Before spending a lot of money, I am going to take the two boxes apart again and use some emery on them. If something is sticking open when it shouldn't that will hopefully solve the problem. It is getting worse. Today I couldn't even pick up a bucket of dry dirt. It may be time to change the filter again. Unfortunately, everything on these tractors are made of gold, at least they cost like they are.

Carlton, your friend is comparing apples to oranges. There is a big difference between a compact tractor and a full size tractor, even if the horsepower is equal. If you compare today's 40hp compact against today's 40hp full size tractor, you'll find that the compact is half the weight and physical size. Your old Deere, although small, was a full size tractor, not a compact, with a full size weight. If you have the storage to accommodate a full size 35-40hp tractor and the acreage to justify it (20+ acres), you'd probably be better off going that route. There are still some manufacturers who make full size machines around 40hp, or you might find a good used unit. For loader work, you'll definately want power steering; 4wd would be nice too.

Hi Mark. Yes, I have considered putting fluid in the tires, but I do not think that alone will solve my problem. This 950 John Deere placed a 1952 Harry Ferguson TO-30 with ag tires that handled the hills much better. I do not mind buying the tires, its those rims and wheels that have stopped me. They aren't just painted gold, apparently the are made of the stuff. Roy

Starter quit about a week ago without warning. Have replaced clutch/solenoid and gear selector neutral switch. No luck. Can start by jumping between positive and black wire connector on starter. Do I need a new ignition (sic) switch? Other safety lockout switch??

Pronovost advertises in a trade Mag called Turf Magazine that caters to the Golf and sports commercial landscape professionals. I have read some reviews on their stuff that are very favorable. They have been in business for some time also, so parts should be available in the future. One thing they were known for was a PTO rear blower that could be driven either forward or backward, don't know if they are still doing that though.

Thanks Eddie. NH has no sales tax so I guess the price is quite high. Sorry for the newbie question but what is a hyrdaulic top link? Also, is a mid-mount PTO used for anything but underbelly mowers? Would front attachments like a snowblower use the mid-mount PTO? Was the brushhog you got in your deal a JD or something else? I might be going to talk to my dealer again today for some price adjustments... Thanks...

I cleared snow last winter using a 60" 3ph blower on a 24hp 4wd tractor. The tractor has turf tires and no chains. The drive is gravel, but there was a lot of freezing rain during December, and several inches of glaze ice lasted most of the winter on parts of the drive.

I could have used more traction for pushing and stacking snow with the loader, but the traction was plenty for blowing. I could have used a little more steering in places, but then, I didn't even have to resort to brake steering.

Here it is that time of year again, and I'm starting to think about chains. I didn't get around to it last winter and maybe I won't this year either. It really was OK last year without chains. Well, there weren't many heavy snow falls last year either.

Who knows what this is all about. You can certainly let your imagination run wild and dream up all sorts of sordid things. I agree with Mike S. that there was certainly no harm done by Scotty's efforts to gather information and there were no new revelations that came out. I really don't care if I can talk with John Deere or not as long as I can get resolution to any problem I might have. I guess this goes back to what has been said here many times, you need to shop for the dealer as hard as you shop for the tractor regardless of brand.

Barry, when I bought my Kubota, I could have gotten a genuine Kubota canopy with it for $395 (some kind of plastic or composition material) and I'm sure it was probably pretty good, but instead the dealer installed an insulated steel canopy, painted to match the tractor, for $295 (and I like it a lot better). I don't know much about the company that made it, but it was the Wells Ag Company in Elm Mott, Texas.

When I let off the pedal on my 4300 quickly the hydro will grab and stop the tractor quickly like the jerking you describe. If I let off the pedal slowly it will ease to a stop. This seems to be normal operation to me. I don't know if that helps with your hydro jerking problem. You should be able to pull, push and dig pretty well. I have yet to pick too big of a job for ours.

I have a Deere 4200 Hydro... My pedal was doing the same thing. Turned out.. the pedal was rubbing the rubber floor mat in the floor/pedal hole (hole the pedal comes through in the floor). Adjusted/moved the pedal forward a little and it took care of the problem...

Different tractor... maybe this will help anyway...

I am looking for a 3 pt finish mower to go on my John Deere 4wd 950. I have been looking around. I am looking at the 7 foot rear discharge Woods, the 7 foot rear discharge Landpride. I have ran across a seller of an Italian Mower by the name of Caroni. Can anyone tell me about the reliability and the performance of any of these mowers. I have heard the rear discharge land pride is having lower bearing problems and the company is working on a fix. The Caroni Saleman says they are as good or better than a Woods ???? Anyone who has used a Woods and a Caroni who could tell me how the Caroni performs ????? There seems to be about a 25 % price difference on the same size of Caroni as compared to the Woods.
