Starter failure

Starter quit about a week ago without warning. Have replaced clutch/solenoid and gear selector neutral switch. No luck. Can start by jumping between positive and black wire connector on starter. Do I need a new ignition (sic) switch? Other safety lockout switch??

Not much help here I'm afraid other than a general testing approach. It does sound like a switch or interlock problem. I'd first see if the solenoid is getting voltage. If it isn't, I'd trace the circuit back to find where there is voltage. Or, maybe jump the switch and interlocks one at a time. Granted, locating and figuring out which contacts to test or jump can be difficult. To do that, you'd have to have a wiring schematic that gives wiring colour codes, and you'd probably need two people. One to hold the switch and the other to do the test. I wouldn't leave jumpers on for long. Solenoids have very short duty cycles, and they burn out if actuated for very long. ....

Thanks for your thoughts and caution on the solenoid test. I wish I had a wiring schematic but unfortunately don't. ....

When checking starter trigger circuit try this. Start at ignition switch with a test light across the bat and start terminals. Light should be on if you have a hot at bat and continuity from start term to solenoid. If it not on then you have either no B+ at key switch or an open between key and solenoid. If light is on, when you hit the start position the light should go off complete. If it does not, then you have an open in the key switch. If it goes dim, but not off, then you have high resistance in key switch. To find opens between key switch and solenoid hook wire end of test light to B+ and begin probe at solenoid working towards key switch, light should come on at each test point, where it stops coming on is where the open is.

Just a thought
I had the same thing happen to me & it turned out to be the Positive terminal
Battery clamp the wire had gone bad & had to be cut & new clamp installed worked
fine since then ....
