I had the same problem last winter. Turned out to be a loose wire on the neutral safety switch.

Further to looking at the brochures about the 790 series...boy they sure don't give you much info.......I have been reading some posts about the differeent tire availabilty for a new JD 790....What is the standard tire that comes with the machine from the factory.?? the bar tread ag tire.???I would be using the machine for lawn mowing...tilling and snow blowing.!!!<br>What would be best tire to purchase with machine...and are they a lot more money???Does anyone use chains on the rears when working in the snow???<br>Glen

Thanks to all who responded.
I have taken the plunge and bought a L3010 HST, also with a Kubota loader, and Farm King 72 inch rear mower. The snow blower will come in November.
My mowing is all flat so I have opted for loaded R-4's for better flat protection.
The dealer suggested them and even offered to exchange them for Turfs within the first few weeks if I experience any turf damage. I'll just have to avoid sharp turns on wet grass, I think.
As an aside, the dealer also sells New Holland in an adjacent location and I tried one side-by-side with the Kubota yesterday as a final test before deciding.
The unit was equiped with optional "super steer" that pivots the whole front axel. The objective is to allow for very sharp turns which it does.
The 3010 has more traditional setup and I was suprised that it's turning radius was "almost" as impressive.
The 3010's gound clearance is noticebly superiour and I am concerned that the New Holland's single pivot point for the axel is more likely to fail.
I also noticed that the New Holland axel would likely be problematic for close loader work since the axel setup causes the front-end to shift significantly when turning the wheels on the spot.
One nice feature; the New Holland seat pivots to 45 degrees. That would likely make reverse driving, as is required with a rear snow blower, less of a pain.
In the end, the Kubota seemed more substantial and less toy-like.
The most surpising discovery was that the Kubota is also the least expensive alternative in my area. I started my research assuming that Kubota is most expensive.
The tractor itself with foldable ROPS was Cdn 19200 or about US 12,800. R-4's were an extra Cdn 400.
The JD 4300 was about Cdn 23,000, a Massey Ferguson 1235 was about Cdn 24,000 ???. I was told that the New Holland would also be a few thousand more but I never asked for a quote.
I started my research assuming that the JD 4300 would be my ultimate choice and it was their sale to loose. This board realy opened up my eyes.

Being pretty new to this compact tractor stuff....I was looking at the brochures for both tractors the other day...comparing the two......the 790 is of course bigger in every way...frame size. wheel size..right down to horsepower......so my question is??why do they give a higher rating ; lifting between the arms at 24" above ground...to the 4100 series..??? I would have thought the 790 would outlift it by double??? I guess I am missing something here...can anyone explain..Glen

Well.....I hope you are all correct....and that they keep cranking out the JD 790's....but..and this has been said before...probably the most correct truth is this......you could talk to 10 different JD dealers and you would probably get 10 different answers....

But if they are any dealers out there that have first hand info...maybe they can share it with the rest of us.....

Your tractor has no 540 rpm PTO capability, only 1000rpm. You can adapt your 1 3/4" 20 spline shaft to the more common 1 3/8" 21 spline 1000rpm drive shaft. It is possible to adapt to the 1 3/8 6 spline used @ 540 rpm, which your cutter has, but DO NOT DO THIS. You will not be able to run the tractor over about 1100 engine rpm without overspeeding your cutter (Hazardous). You have only 3 options: 1; buy a tractor with a 540 PTO. 2; buy a cutter with set up to run @ 1000 PTO rpm with the 1 3/4-20 shaft. 3; take your cutter's model # serial # to a dealer for that brand, find out if it canbe converted to 1000 RPM w/ your shaft size, and at what cost.

Not enough information to know exactly what needs to be done. I'd think the first thing would be to get it identified, and then if it were me, I'd have to take it apart to see whether I could fix it. Unfortunately, the gearbox is about the most expensive thing you can break on the mower.

Dana, you can buy those 3-point hitches at places like Northern Tool for a couple of hundred dollars, but I built my own, too, but instead of a receiver like you're using (which is the best, of course), I built a cheap one and use a convert-a-ball so I can quickly change ball sizes. That's one of the handiest things I have, but if I already have another implement on the 3-point, then I use the front end loader when necessary.

A Canadian welding shop also made my blower. Maybe it's a Canadian specialty.

I think these companies are fabricators and don't supply much sales and service support whether they're in business or not. Compared to brand name implements, the price is pretty good, since the company doesn't have to maintain customer support, parts inventories, dealer networks etc. The downside is that there is nobody to call up and say: 'I need a part number such and such.'

The bright side is that fabricators usually don't make the mechanical parts. I think they mostly order ready-made parts from OEM catalogues. I haven't had to try yet, but I think most anybody familiar with this type of fabrication should be able to find replacement mechanical parts

Roger, volatge regulators do not get polarized. Polarizing is done because DC generators have one north and one south residual magnet. When switching battery polarity these two magnets have to swap polarity, ie, the north needs to go south and south go north. Or if the unit sits around long enough (rebuild) the residual magnets may change polarity on their own. Polarizing is done by flashing the field coils wraped around these magnets with a quick shot of current (electro-magnet) running in the proper direction. However, if you are going to a 12 system from a 6 volt system then the regulator must be changed to a 12 volt unit. This is because the resistance values on the coil windings (heavy gauge stuff) are way to low for the 12 volts now running through them and thus the current values will accordinlgly be far to high. Bottom line, all of this is not going to work very well and most likely will cause smoke.
Since all solid state accessories are now neg gnd, there is no point in doing a 6 to 12 conversion and staying with the pos gnd system.
DC generators require a current limiting relay that alternators do not need. Consequently, the dc voltage regulator must be matched to the generator in both AMPERAGE and voltage. DC generators will easily produce twice their design output,(though not for long) if this current is not limited by the regulator.
Voltage regulators for alternators need only to be matched in voltage for alternators will limit themselves in regard to max current output. In other words, a 100 amp, 12v alternator can use the same voltage regulator as 50 amp 12v unit.
Since it's only watts that count, a typical 6v gen will usually have twice the amperage of a 12 volt unit while producing the same total watts.

ClayW--regarding your suggestion to contact JD Customer Service--I have phoned them and e-mailed them AND have even written the executive in charge of compact diesel tractors. Their communications center handled all of my inquiries or complaints. A year ago, when I questioned customer service about the lawn-scuffing issue, they were unaware of it and upon checking with their superiors, were still unaware of it. Each inquiry or complaint was handled with a friendly customer service rep that did not have a clue about any of the issues that I raised. Even the letter written personally to the eexecutive officer was handled by JD's communications center with a phone call and the person at the other end having no knowledge of the issues that I raised. In case you are wondering, I was polite and business-like in all correspondence. If it were an automobile company, your suggestion of contacting customer service would work pretty well, but JD expects the customer to work only with the dealer. My dealer is fine, except that some other dealer's customers with troublesome tractors that had fewer problems than mine did get new tractors. I even offered a cash bonus and suggested that they transfer the mower and loader to the new tractor and sell my previous tractor without a belly mower and JD would not have to spend $3500 repairing the front with the idea that JD, my dealer and I would all win. I was told that the area JD rep said NO. If this was an automobile, the Missouri lemon law would have required a replacement, but the lemon law doesn't extend to tractors, unfortunately. After all of the repairs, it is slowly leaking transmission fluid from an axle seal (seals were replaced when the brakes were replaced) and the forward pedal doesn't always rise back up immediately after taking my foot away, so I never know if it is going to stop or keep on going another 5 to 20 ft. And once in a while it will not run in road gear on a level road--it just loses RPMs like the brakes are dragging. Other than these issues and the belly mower leaving stripes of taller grass, it now seems to run fine and the loader works great. Mike S.

Ross, I was pulling a stump out of my Dad's yard today and was all over it pulling and pushing and didn't leave a single scuff mark. I believe the scuffing problem has been fixed. I did tear the grass up a little spinning the tires but no scuffing.

We have a JD model 51 post driver that I picked up used. After some expermintation it works very well on our NH TC33D compact tractor. We are installing metal T posts and also wooden 5 inch peeler core style posts.

I had a problem with the shifting on the TC33D. Had the Dealer service it and now it changes ranges very smothly. Also PTO and 4 WD now engage and disengage easily...

Hi guys, a long stroke engine has a longer distance from the center of the crank to the center of the connection rod journal. This would give more torque to the crank for a given amount of pressure on piston crown. It kinda like using a cheater pipe on a breaker bar. Another point is that the pressure (psi) above the piston is not linear. This pressure, at full burn, is the highest when the volume above the piston is the smallest. As the piston descends and the burn area increases the psi per sq inch decreases as burn force is applied to a larger surface area. Gasoline has an expansion factor of about 4, that is 15psi compressed to 10 to 1= 150 psi at end of compression stroke. Light this off with the spark plug and will expand to a max of about 600psi and then begins to drop off as piston goes on down. The louder the exhaust the higher the more residual pressure left in the cyl is when the exhaust valve opens. This is why racing engines have a louder exhaust then basic work engines that are designed to get as much pressure per pound of fuel as possible applied to the piston instead of out the door. The downside of this, of course is reduce volumemetric efficiency. Peter, your description of the connection between volumemetric efficiency and torque was terrfic. Hope the above makes some sense.

Thanks for the info. You may well be right, and JD just relied on common sense not to break the motor. In fact, I'm going out to see an 830 today and will look to see if there is anything special. The most common metering system was nothing more than a calculated volume. Ether under its own gas pressure can only put so many molecules of itself into this space - which could be something as simple as a a short length of pipe that the ether can was either screwed into or sprayed into. I have also seen it as a chamber that you put an glass vial of ether into and then screw it in until the vial breaks. Vapor pressure then fills a second chamber with only a certain amount of the gaseous vapor. A real simple concept that limited the quantity of ether - although it could be defeated in the field.
