I'm looking for some info folks. I've been reading the posts which you all talk about different model 's and makes of tractors, but I'm confused about what they look like and how big they are. I'd like to know if there's a site to view pix of these tractors?Also.. I've got about 10 acres of fields that I need to cut and do routine tractor stuff(hauling, york rakeing, maybe some discing) What size and type tractor would you guys reccomend. I've got and old Ford 9n now, so I'm looking to upgrade! Thanks!<br>SOB

Tom has raised a valid point, HOWEVER, with the amount of material it sounds like you need to remove, and the amount of steel in a bush-hog blade it is pretty unlikely you will heat them up enough to even make them warm to the touch. Best of luck.

A dealer has a JD 750, 4WD, 820 hours, with loader for $6800. It was a trade from a landscape contractor. The paint's faded and there are a couple dings, but the dealer believes it's mechanically fine. The previous owner did say there's been a small hydro leak at the power steering for a while, but it's not really a problem. What do you all think of the price? Also, I don't see many posts for the 750- did they not sell many of them? Was there some problem with them that made them unpopular? Thanks, I really appreciate the advice of this board.

I REMEMBER RECENTLY A QUESTION ABOUT OBTAINING FORKS WHICH COULD BE USED ON FRONT END LOADERS IN PLACE OF THE BUCKET. I would suggest the front blade is much better, at least for snow removal. I have a 322, same blade. Advice - weight is important. I built a ballast box for the rear of my tractor (mounts in the same channel as my rear bagger) that I fill with sand, wet and let freeze. Adds about 200 lbs and makes a huge difference. Chains on the tires are required if using turf tires and adjust pressure to maximum suggested. The problem with all garden tractors and ground engaging implements is traction. They just don't have the weight to be effective. For snow, the best solution is to angle the blade and keep moving. Plow uphill if possible, as backing uphill with the weight of the blade on the front is difficult at best. Use your differential brakes to help when one wheel starts to slip. I have cleared 2' of snow from my 300' drive no problem. For gravel drives, do not use the float setting. You will dig in!! For pavement, float works fine, but traction is even worse.

For gravel and dirt, the blade will effectively spread loose gravel, and will dig soft dirt, but don't expect to cut through sod, or into hard packed dirt. The secret is to go slow and take little bites. I wouldn't want to be trying to do a large project, but I have backfilled around foundations, levelled gravel, and smoothed out a new lawn effectively. For dirt use, unlock the blade to save the tractor! Again, you will find that the wheels will spin and dig a hole if you try to push too much at once. I find that levelling is best accomplished in reverse. Set the blade to float and back up, pulling the material with you.

IMO 3 pt blades do a better job of levelling, but are not as effective for pushing dirt, or for snow. For snow, you essentially need to drive over the snow first, and about 4" is enough to stop a 318 with turfs, chains or not. Going in reverse is just hard to do!

Just a note about box scraper use: I used the scraper with the hydraulic top link for the first time several days ago. Between the link and the lift, I was able to do some decent grading without getting off the tractor except to change the lower link level. If I was doing a bunch of this type work, a hydraulic lower link leveler might be good, except I can see myself ending up with a tractor festooned with hydraulic hose.

I was building up a previously graded pad for a mobile with gravel. The job was mostly dragging material around, so I wasn't using the link much to adjust between cutting and spreading. Even so, I made several dozen adjustments. The link makes a big difference. For example, the best tilts for dragging material and for dozing with the rear cutter are different. Without the hydraulic link, I probably would have set a tilt that sort of worked for each, rather than getting off the tractor to change the tilt.

I even found that the scraper does a better job of smoothing than the back of a loader bucket. With the link fully extended, the scraper can be floated on the back of its rear cutter. I'm not sure a standard link would extend far enough for that trick. A lot of the way a scraper behaves seems to depend on whether the surface is packed enough so the side plates will float. Of course, they just sank in the newly spread gravel, so I had to use position control most of the time.

If the tractor does have a double clutch, you can successfully use it with a snowblower and not have it clogging up all the time. It does take some getting used to, however. An independent PTO is easier to use.

In addition to the tractor, I splurged and got a 5' rotary mower, a 5' King Kutter gear-driven tiller, a 6' blade, a one row cultivator, and a 15" middle-buster. I've had no problems with any of them. The tiller worked wonderfully--much better than being dragged around the 50'x30' garden my wife has me get ready each year. Instead of a half day of tilling, I had everything tilled and the rows laid out within an hour. I've also used the tiller on the 1/2 acre that I'm growing pumpkins and vegetables in--worked like a charm. The cultivator has come in somewhat handy though I wish my soil had a little less clay. The cultivator has a tendency to cultivate some pretty big chunks of soil. Guess I really should have spent that extra year getting the fields ready. I've used the blade to distribute rocks on my gravel drive. Doesn't work all that well--kind of wish I bought a box scraper. I settled on the blade cause it'll be my back up for snow removal.

I have a JD420 loader and would like to buy a spare heavy duty 60" bucket to use with some bolt on tines. I checked with my JD dealer and was AMAZED at the price (over $600.00). Anyone out there know of an aftermarket bucket that is available for less cash? By the way...I don't mind having to paint it green myself....

I'm looking to get a tractor with a back hoe to remove tree stumps. How
long did it take to dig up one stump? I have about 10 acres of stumps to clear
and I'm wondering if the JD backhoes on a 4300-4500 tractor will do the job.

You are in luck. The 232 shared the same engine with the Massey 210 and the Allis Chalmers 5020. The 232 is and older tractor the 1802. The 1802 had the same engine I believe as the Massey 1020.

I have used 2 Cat 1 implements one is a Land Pride 72" rear blade. I have had no problem hitching it up. What is the pin to pin end distance on your implement? Let's compare.

I believe the jury is still out on Chinese tractors. I have talked to some who say they are OK and of course others who never seemed to have owned one who say they are not. I am waiting to see. I will say that I have visited with the owner of a Chinese tractor and was not impressed. It would not start (we did tinker with it and got it started, the starter switch was bad) and the hydraulics would not lift the 3 pt. They would operate the backhoe. However, the owner thought this was a great tractor. So again, wait and see.

I got a response very quickly after my post. The only problem for me was the cost of shipping but the price on the finish mower was very good. Even with shipping, it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than buying locally. The poster is from easter farm machinery located in Canada.

I had been discussing different tractors over the past couple of months & I thought we were talking about the TC33D. I only have 10 hours on the unit, but so far, it is great...

Just a quick thought from someone who has done tree work as a profession - topping, take downs, power line clearing, clear cutting, etc. Trees, in general, are fairly predictable but always unforgiving. Much of the time, you are working by intuition and previous experience and you can never see inside a piece of wood. If a person is working by guesswork or long range advice from people who may or may not be professionals there can very well be a disappointing end to a seemingly simple project. I'm not throwing off on anyone - just ask a tree man, logger or other professional in a related field and they will tell you that there is always an element of danger and the unknown that can come to you fast and at the most unexpected moments. You may get a lifetime of mistakes or only one. When in doubt, it is sometimes best to round up a professional - even if you are going to do the work yourself and only pay for the advice. Work safe - wear your saw chaps (I've seen them save a life), eye protection, etc. Good luck in the woods.
