I thinking of trading my 88-755 in on a 96-855 how ever the 855 does not have a mid mount deck, the dealer said my deck can be switched to the 855.Does anyone know of any problems that can pop up before get into it, this is a 60" deck<br>thanks Dana

Danny... I bought the one from Tractor Supply several years back, and used it a lot with my old Ford 8N. I still have it, although haven't used it since I got a new tractor with a front loader. As someone else said, its strong point is being able to rip into the ground (if you have the power and traction). Great for digging ditches etc. I have an old Ford sales video from when the 8N was new, showing a farm pond/dam being built with 4 or 5 8Ns with rear scoops! My only real problem was that if the load of dirt was too far to the back (opposite the cutting edge), it didn't want to dump when the rope was pulled. I never even thought of adding hydraulics to it, but some type of dump-assist would be nice. In general, you can move a lot of "stuff" with 'em!

I'm not sure where you picked up the notion that the three point hitch shouldn't be used to totally or partially support an implement. For many applications, there is always a vertical "load" on the hitch when the implement is working properly. In the case of the rotary cutter where you want to maintain an approximately level cut, the most satisfactory approach is to use "check chains." These are simple chains that connect to the tractor at the point where the top link connects and then down to the draft pins on the lower links. They limit how far down the draft links can go but do not limit how high up they can go. You set the check chains to determine the height of cut on the front of the cutter which should be slightly lower than the rear of the cutter. On a rotary cutter, the top link always needs some float. On a 513 cutter it is provided by a short secondary link on the cutter itself. You adjust the tractor top link so that when the tail wheel is running on the ground and the check chains hold the front at your specified height, the top link should droop downward a bit. As you drive over hill and swale the cutter will then follow the ground contours. You can get check chains at many dealers. Can also try www.easternfarmequipment.

Thanks, Murf, for the tips. I'll start with new hydraulic fluid and filter. By the way, can anyone confirm that it's ok to mix in used hydraulic fluid and or gear oil with used motor oil for recycling? I heard it's commonly done.

Here in the midwest you can buy old 100-130 hp tractors for about the same price as old 40-50 hp tractors. Do you want something that big? A 40-50hp tractor will probably do what you want it to do.

I have been looking at the same machines, althought i have also looked at the JD 4100 and Kubota's B machines. The real mystery is the NH Boomers. I want a front loader at the very least and cannot find any prices on the net. By the way check out http://www.kubota-tractors.com/b2710.htm for a B2710HSD w/ LA401 for $16,000. That seems to be a good deal, although I have not contacted them.

Martin,

how do you like the R4 tires? My dealer tends to get his tractors with turf tires (R3), but I am sceptical about their performance when doing loader work or clearing snow. Do the R4s damage the lawn when you mow, or are they a reasonnably good compromise between R1 and R3?

If you make or buy a couple of bolt-on end plates for your back blade, you end up with a tool that works like a box blade but can be angled. Using it with one end set higher than the other enables you to dig with half of the blade and spread with the other half. Putting a few hundred pounds of weight on the frame of the back blade helps a lot.

Believe it or not, one of the primary reasons I bought the JD4400 over a Boomer was that the frame-mounted backhoe (JD47 or 48) was compatible with a belly mower. To my knowledge only Deere and Massey Ferguson have this capability with their OEM backhoes.

Vincent, I'm really not all that knowledgeable - it's just that I had been over that same ground before! As to quality, I've got my fingers crossed on the JD4400 I bought. JD had some well-publicized (on these boards, anyhow) problems with front axle tire scuffing and early production problems with a hydrostatic thrust washer, among other things. The new 4200/4300/4400 tractors produced since March 1 are improved in many areas that I have heard mentioned on this board. So I'm hoping that the early production woes are past on this model. I liked the Boomers when I was shopping, but really don't have much first-hand data on their reliability. As I mentioned in another post, I've seen some units that were delivered with a little rust on them, but I've seen that in Deere and Kubota also and I don't consider that indicative of poor reliability (more indicative of living in the Northeast and seeing tractors that were exposed to some road salt during delivery). I think that the big 3 are pretty equal in reliability usually, with the exception of the early problems with the JD 4x00 series.

FYI: Seems PA is getting warmer every year. While it is rare for us to hit 100 degrees, it is no longer uncommon to see 90-95 degrees in July/Aug. Just had to mention that because everyone in the south thinks our summer temperatures only reach the 80's. BTY: having done a bit of work in Guymon, OK. I now understand the second reason its called the pan handle, its temperature is well matched for its reference..

I was in the exact same situation. I just sold my 8N because I orderd a 790. I have been looking for the last six years for a used tractor, but had no luck. I wanted a 25hp tractor and live PTO. I found the B2400 to be a nice unit but thought it was a little small physically. I want a lager front end loader than the B2400 could handle. I looked at the B2710 and it fit the bill perfectly, but was a little out of the price range, along with a JD4200 and Boomer 25D. I wanted hydrostatic, but felt I could live with out it, and the couple of thousand $ I saved by going with the 790, I can get a tiller. I liked the 8N and wanted to keep it, but needed the cash for the 790. I think the quality between Deere and Kubota is the same, and for me the deciding factor was size and price. In one to 6 weeks I should have the 790.

I haven't done a web search looking for tractor tires, but there almost certainly are sites the give prices for tires and rims. I go to a dealer for most things.

If the question of stability has occurred, then there probably is a problem. Carrying the bucket lower would do more for stability than any tire would. Stability in a turn probably is an insignificant factor in deciding whether turf tires are what is needed.

Thanks Murf,I guess that the tractor, loader, rear blade and snow blower are the only things left. The tractor and loader are 18000 the blower is 2000 and this thing is bionic realy works great, and the front mount is realy worth the hassel it takes about 4 minutes to hook up. I can provide more info if anyone else is interested. And thanks for all the kind words it is nice to know people care.
