Wondering about recent quote to Massey 1235 w/1244 loader w/joystick control, 60" Eagle line box blade w/rippers and 60" Landpride rotary cutter. Going to be using to improve 3 to 4 acres of pasture and possible light clearing palmettos and general use. Any comments good or bad about this model Massey.

Keith, you've got to wonder about Massey....They've been around forever, their tractors are as good as you'll find, you never hear about any problems with any of them, and the prices are less than some of the "off-brands". Every one who has one seems to be satisfied with it. Used ones rarely hit the market. But for some reason they just don't have the cultish following of JD or Kubota. Everyone knows the name, and Massey claims to be the number one selling brand world wide. If true, they have managed this without really igniting anyone's passion. I took the 1235-4 for a test drive a few months back and was impressed by how quiet it was, how handy all the controls were, and particularly how easy to get on and off. Everything worked perfectly. Visibility was great. The engine and transmission work fine. The fit and finish is top notch, and they seem to be nicely beefy where it counts. The dealer is a long time friend of mine, and he says that they are just as durable as a person could want. So why aren't they more popular? Personally, I think it's the wheels..:-)..I never did care for the look of that 4-spoke rear wheel...and the fronts look like garden tractor wheels to me. Then they go and paint them electric grey. They always have. Same color for 50 years. Nobody else paints their wheels grey, do they? I wonder if Massey knows about this??

I test-drove a 1240 with 1246 loader at my local dealership on Saturday. Seems like a well built tractor. Very responsive and 12/12 gearbox with forward reverse shuttle seems to be a nice feature.
Price quoted for tractor and loader was around $ 17,000. ....

How does that price compare to a comperable JD or Kubota? Around here, it would be a saving of a few thousand - at least. See what I mean about Massey? Dandy tractors, known to be reliable, proud old American brand name....and all that stuff....And even here on the Compact Tractor Board there just isn't much interest. Do you think it really could be those wheels? What did you think of the overall look of the tractor? I'm thinking it has to be something with the aesthetics. ....

I own a Massey 1250 with R4 tires with a 1246 loader. I am very happy with the performance of the machine. I got the best price from David Bowman at Tractorsmart.com.

how do you like the R4 tires? My dealer tends to get his tractors with turf tires (R3), but I am sceptical about their performance when doing loader work or clearing snow. Do the R4s damage the lawn when you mow, or are they a reasonnably good compromise between R1 and R3? ....

Markus, I like the R4 tires for everything. It will only dig up the lawn when I take a very sharp corner. I think a 1250 with a 1246 loader is to heavy for everyday mowing. I am considing trading it on for a 1235 with a 1244 loader. ....
