I recently purchased a 1982 New Holland compact articulating 4wd loader backhoe.It's a nifty machine. It has a 3 cyl Ford diesel engine, hydrostatic drive, and it has 1150 hours. I have seen one of these machines work before and it seemed to have tremendous power. The problem with my machine is that even in low range and at full throttle the wheels do not get much power. In high range you cannot even drive up a moderate hill. The engine runs great and does not bog down. There just seems to be slippage - like a car with a worn out clutch. The loader and the backhoe work but are not quite as powerful as I had hoped. A fellow backhoe owner told me that it sounds like the hydraulic pump is going bad. Does anyone have experience with this sort of problem. Is there any way to adjust or tighten things up? Is it possible to rebuild a pump or would it have to be replaced? Does anyone know what to expect for cost?

Alan, there are several things that could cause this problem. Start with the easiest (cheapest) and work up from there. Change the hydraulic fluid and filter it may be that the fluid & filter are dirty enough that the by-pass valve is opening, causing the pressure & volume loss. Next check that the by-pass valve is not stuck open or opening too early (too low a pressure) this is easily done by disconnecting a hydraulic line and putting a pressure gauge in it's place, (a 3000 psi gauge = $20.00) you should have at least 2000psi, 2500 ideally. IF not then you will have to send the pump out to be checked out or repaired. The spring in the by-pass valve is notorious for letting go, they are not expensive, but the pump has to (usually) come out to repair it. If there is a specialized Hydraulics shop near you they will probably want you to bring them the whole machine in order to have a look at it. Best of luck. ....

Thanks, Murf, for the tips. I'll start with new hydraulic fluid and filter. By the way, can anyone confirm that it's ok to mix in used hydraulic fluid and or gear oil with used motor oil for recycling? I heard it's commonly done. ....
