David, you can do just about anything with a small hoe. It just takes longer. My soil is real hard, it is mostly red dirt and rock. I just finished digging, 2300' of ditches. These ranged from 2' to 5'. As some one else said, you do have a problem with reach. When you are digging 4'-5' deep, you need to set your bucket on top of the pile and curl the bucket out. That way it will deposit the dirt and push it to the other side of the pile.

My Massey dealer says that he can get parts for the TAFT's just as easy as anything else. He sales Masseys and TAFTS. TAFT has been making Masseys (under licences)in India for over 30 years.

I don't know who makes it, but Tyson Foods has compressors on there tire service trucks that are made from 5.0 litre (302) Ford motors. One side of the V-8 is the compressor and it is powered by the other side. They have been using these since at less 1980.

John, I don't know what kind of soil you have, but in my area our soil is not soft and sandy. Given this, most pole barns that are built here, don't have any concrete around the pole or if they do it's just enough (2-3" bigger than the hole) to tie the pole into solid undisturbed soil. I have a large one, thats 20'X 120' that we built in 1972 with no concrete in the pier holes and it's still solid. JerryG

HELLO, Four months ago, I bought 70 acres in NW Arkansas to add to the 12 I did own. Then I started building 4 chicken houses (88200 chickens). Soon after buying the farm, I purchased a new Massey Ferguson 1250-4 tractor, 1217 backhoe, 1246 loader, a Woods M5 bush hog, 5' box blade, 5' blade, 16" single bottom plow, a single row cultivator and a Bush Hog 2101 post hole digger. I have put over 200 hours on the tractor, digging the footing for 2 of the 500' chicken houses, cleaned out 2-400 ft. houses, bush hogging about 40 acres, plowed a small field, blading for the several different pads in and around the chicken houses, digging several post holes and now I am in the process of digging about 1800 feet of water and electric line ditches. The Massey may not be the number 1 seller in compact tractor like it is in large ones, but if I had it to do again I WOULD buy the same tractor. It has lots of power, the operator station is large and comfortable, the controls are well layed out. JerryG

Mark, There was at one time a company that put out what was call a Tree Hog. You could back up into up to a 6" tree and cut it down. I don't know if they are still around. It was a lot like a bush hog, but really heavy and it had 4 short heavy blades. The rear of the unit was cut away and had a spring loaded bar that you had to push in to cut. The unit also had a cage over it to protect the operator.

Charlie, A sickle bar mower would do the trick IF you don't need to cut anything but grass. You would have to have one that "doesn't" have a pitman arm. The ones with pitmans don't allow you to cut much that isn't level. Most pond bank that I have seen are not very level. JerryG

Todd, if you can put a little bit larger loader on then that is the way to go. Your speed may be some what slower(not much), but you will have more reserve power for lifting. I'm at that place now. I'm going to go from 2" lift cylinders to 2.5" by this summer. Good luck.

I bought a Bush Hog model #2101 digger today. My ground has a lot of rocks. How bad are they about breaking the shear pins. Do I need to just buy a few or a lot?

Jon, go by a dealer that has Bush Hog brand diggers. They have a parking stand. I am going to make me one. They are real simple to make and you don't even have to weld they.

If you want to really tear it up deep, get you a "one" bottom plow. Match the size to you tractor HP. They are made in 10",12",14" and 16". This plow will go deep and turn the soil upside down to bury the weeds, grass and stems. When you use a bottom plow you wouldn't have the hard ridge between the rows that you would have with a potato plow (middle buster). JerryG

I needed weight on my blade, box blade and on a plow. I wanted a weight that would be easy to change from one to the other. I got a large 6" dia. pipe with about 7/8" wall. The man at the steel place said it weighted 47 lbs./ ft. I cut it to five feet to fit my tools. Then welded a hook on top to lift it. To be able to change it between tools I welded two 3" pieces of channel about 5" long to the bottom of the pipe. I then welded two piece of 4" channel about 5" long to each implement just like stake holes on a pickup. Now when I need it, I hook a chain to the hook, pick it up and drop it in the stake holes on the implement that I want to use. The pipe cost around $7/ft. At 5' that gives me 250 lbs that I can use on all my toys.

I don't think I'll use a Fram filter on my Massey Ferguson 1250-4 again. A while back I put a Fram hydralic filter on. After that my tractor wouldn't lift as much,it had pump noise, and the valve under the seat would sound like it had a leak. I have now found out the problem. It was the Fram filter, It had the same number of oil holes, but they were only half the size of the ones on the Massey Ferguson filter.
