Ok, I've got a stupid question about batteries. I've got a Ford 1320 that would not start from the installed battery unless I jumped it from my truck. So I was figuring the battery was probably worn out (6 years old) and I replaced it with the closest thing I could find which was an automotive battery from Tractor Supply (I know the agriculture batteries are probably better but this was all I could find in a pinch).

All my Ford manual states is the battery is a 12V, 70 amp hour rating with negative ground. The battery that I purchased shows it is 12V with 450 cold cranking amps. I charged the battery myself overnight, installed it in the tractor, and the daggone thing will still not start without a jump from my truck. The tractor is only a 17hp diesel; is this battery not large enough or is something else going on?

Thanks.

My first guess would be that you have a bad ground connection on your tractor either at the battery terminal or on the other end mounting to the frame. Try that and see if it works. ....

You may be low on the CCA rating. From somewhere I have the notion that the CCA spec for my 1710 is 775 but I looked and can't find a reference. I do know that 1310 - 1710 take the same battery. Diesels take pretty high CCA's to spin the engine fast enough. I use an Exide auto battery that I think puts out over 900 CCA's. ....

Try cleaning the terminals. They may be glazed or corroded. ....

I believe my starter has a little more ommph since I cleaned the connections at the solenoid, and don't forget to clean the ground terminal at the chassis connection. It the ground connects to the battery box like on my 1710, the connections between the box and chassis also should be inspected or an ohm reading taken. I've even heard of somebody moving the ground connection from the box to a starter mounting bolt but I don't know if that's advisable. ....

Thanks to all who helped out. I took your advice and cleaned all of the connections including the battery terminals, battery clamps, ground frame, and the solenoid. Just tried it and it turned right over!

Thanks again!
