My son and I have a piece of land with about 40 acres of pasture. We will need a tractor to mow and do other chores---perhaps a little snow plowing and hauling and maybe pulling small trees out. We would like something very reliable and have heard that diesels are just that. Any recommendation of what make, model, and year to go after? We have a budget of about $10,000, with a stretch of a little more, if necessary for the tractor and the mower

With that budget for tractor and implements you will have to buy used at auction or similar, I suggest you go for something around the 40 hp range. No lower than 30 hp and probably wont need higher that 50. Any brand will do, just make sure you have a reputable dealer close at hand. ....

I have a JD 790 for my 35 acres, and it is great, anything smaller would be too small for me.. I have found the Front end loader indispensable.. Something used will probable put you into your budget. The new 790, loader, snow thrower, rough cut mower, and finish mower, cost about $20,000. If you’re only using it mowing and some snow you could probably do with something smaller. ....

I started with a 790 for my country place and It's been a good little machine, but in time Ive come up with different plans and idea's and I'm finding out that the better machine would have been in the 40 to 50 hp range. It will be hard to find one of that size in the money range your talking about, But there are a lot of older models out there that can be found. Don't go to small or you'll wish you didn't down the road.I did and now It's costing me a bit to upgrade. That my take on it. ....

I have 32 acres here in Western PA that I am doing the same things you described wanting to do in your post. I wrestled with the lower budget CUT's idea for several months and was actually close to having made up my mind to purchase one until I went to several dealers (blue-green-orange) and test drove them or had them bring to the property for a demo..

I've posted this before...it's during this process that you really find out what the machine will do. They ALL look good on paper and it's worth the effort it takes to demo them. I opted for the larger TC33D/7308 FEL. It has far surpassed my expectations and has done everything I have asked of it. I have since added homebuilt front forks, a homebuilt ballast box, a homebuilt landscape rake, Woods 5' brush hog and a Woods 84" RFM. This tractor handles them all with ease.

Considering what I have done with my machine and what I experienced testing the smaller one's, I doubt 10k will get you the machine you need unless you can find one used.

My .02
Tim ....

Your only option is used for that much money. And any sizable tractor for 10k or less is going to be 10 to 20 years old. But that is not always a bad thing there were some very good tractors made then. Just keep you your eye open and if you have any questions just ask. We are here to help. ....

Rick
If your 10K is in cash, have you considered financing the rest? A tc33 should do you, the impliments you talk about can be a after thought and used. A back blade will do till you get the ching for better. Go price a tc33w/fel keep it simple and you may find that with a little financing you can swing the new tractor. Regaurdless of what you end up with make sure it is what you really want AND need or dont get it. Your new tractor should last you the rest of your life and will be a fine investment. (That is the line I used on my bride! it worked also)
Good luck ....
