Some of you know my tc45d is in the shop...I paid the dealer to transport for some last minute warranty work, I have a hydraulic leak, and a couple minor things. I'm thinking of having them change the oil while it's there, and many of you have suggested various oils, etc. What do you think is reasonable for the dealer to charge for engine oil/filter change? Depending on the oil, what do you think I could do it myself for? How much oil (I'm at work, manual is at home)does it take? With 140 hours, anything else I should consider to have done while it is there?

Depending on what the dealer charges for shop labor, it is more than likely far cheaper to change the oil yourself. Pretty simple and straight forward. Doing these services yourself more importantly provides you the opportunity to pay close attention to any potential maintenance issues with the tractor that may go un-noticed when the dealer does them for you. They are on the clock and do the work as fast as possible. For example, when I did the 50 hr. service on my 4410, I allowed the tractor to sit for a amost 2 days to allow until the all the oil stopped dripping out of the engine and trans. I am not saying you need to go that far but it gave me a good opportuntity to observe all of the areas and any signs of trouble during the service, plus I know I got every last possible bit of old oil out.
As far as the oil change, any good quality oil and filter. I prefer to stick with OEM or Fleetguard filters and I use the John Deere 15W-40 Plus 50 oil and Hyguard. You are in a much colder climate than I am and you store your tractor in an unheated barn so perhaps a good quality sythetic engine oil would be more practical. Are you going to have the dealer install the block heater for you while it is in the shop? A transmission oil heater may be another good idea if the tractor is kept in unheated storage. This might be as good a time as any to have it done. Usually, block heaters and the trans. oil heaters are around $35 to $50 plus labor. Hope they get you all taken care of! ....

The dealer just called me...they want $201 for changing "all" of the filters...oil, air, fuel, hydro, and changing the engine oil (not synthetic, even though I think I would prefer synthetic), and lube job. Considering I've been up to my eyeballs in alligators lately, I'm considering having them do it, especially since I'm the second owner, and I don't think the original owner did ANY maintenance...they haven't figured out the hydraulic leak yet... ....

I can certainly identify with the being up to you eyeballs in allegators. Been there before. That being the case, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do to make the best of your time and get the job done. The dealer should do the job alright. Just check their work and carefully inspect the tractor BEFORE it leaves the dealer if possible in order to get any issues resolved and questions answered. It is better to do it yourself in most cases but sometimes things just don't pan out. Are you going to have them install the block and trans oil heaters while it is there too? May as well. ....
