I have a International 444 (1977 i believe) which has the following hydraulic woes.Set the hydraulic to a set point with load: Lift arms drop approx 4 inches, then jerk back to the set point. If the lift arms are loaded, initially this jerking becomes more frequent, and after approx 30-60 mins the arms will drop altogether and refuse to lift anything at all. Lift arms do not stay up when tractor is shut off.Changing draft control has no effect on problem.Hydraulic oil reservoir is at correct level.Local mechanic has replaced main hydraulic cylinder seal with little improverment.Any tips/hints before i begin major surgery on the hydraulics would be really appreciated.Pat

Boy oh boy! A guessing game! I'm going to put my money on it being a simple problem in one of the "spring and ball" one way valves - could be as simple as a broken spring or some crud holding the ball open. Like you, I'd look for it in the internal depth and draft control circuit. This circuit is fairly complex and hard to figure out how it works without a manual. I'd sure get the workshop manual first. JD manuals have a good section on the general philosophy of how their load and depth controls work in their "Powertrol" manual. Those IH 444s are sure nice tractors Roger L ....

I had a similar problem with a backhoe, turned out to be a clogged hydraulic filter, when I used pressure the clogged filter didn't allow replenishment, and some crap had by-passed it and was sticking valves open. A good flush, fresh fluid, and a new filter, ta-da, ran like a new machine !!Good luck. ....

The International 444 was built prior to 1977. A 485 Mahindra 1998 is very close. It sounds like you have a O-Ring blown on your lift piston. The fact that with the tractor shut off and the lift goes down is one thing that makes me feel that this is your problem. ....
