I recently purchased a 655 that has the 50" belly mower. I want to remove the deck. I disconnected all the quick mounting points. The deck is free except for the PTO shaft. The deck slides in and out on the square drive shaft but I can not pull it free. It seems to hit a mechanical stop (it isn't just stuck from rust).

Any one out there own a similar set-up that can help me out??

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I have a 60 inch mower on my JD650. On my output shaft there is a collar that must be slid back in order to release the drive shaft. There are some ball bearings inside the connector that fit in a groove on the output shaft on the mid pto. Sliding the collar back on the drive shaft releases these bearings enough to let the shaft come off the pto. Maybe yours is similiar? ....

Thanks for the help. Since the 650 and 655 are basically the same with respect to this, then mine must be the same, true? I do not recall any collar that could be slid. I will attempt again tonight.

When you remove your deck, what remains with the tractor? On mine there is a u-joint with a square shaft coming off the PTO. On the deck, there is a mating coupler to the square shaft then a u-joint then the gear box. The square shaft and the coupler slide in and out but do not come a part. Thats my problem.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, you don't want the drive line to come apart to take it off the tractor. You take it loose from the PTO output shaft (tractor side of the u-joint). In other words both pieces of the driveshaft and both u-joints stay with the mower. Once it's removed from the tractor, I'll bet you can slide those two parts of the driveshaft apart, but there's no need to unless you need to clean and/or lubricate them. ....

Mark, I am not sure if our machines hook up the same way, but this is what I have. There is a gearbox on the deck. A u-joint and half of the drive shaft are fastened to it. The other half of the drive shaft slides over the first half and has a u-joint that is connected to the pto output shaft. The u-joint that connects to the pto output is the part that has the sliding collar. It sounds to me like you are trying to separate the two halfs of the drive shaft. On my setup this can be done but you must give it a sharp dug. Mine also will only go back together one way. Hence, I never separate my two halfs. If you leave half of the shaft in place and someone turns on the pto...Well you can just imagine...

Soon, I will be getting a digital camera. A picture could be worth a thousand words in this case. ....

Thanks for all the advice, you are right, I am trying to take it apart from the middle of the shaft between the two u-joints. I will look at the connection directly at the PTO and work from there tonight. I bet I will have better luck!! I do not have all the manuals yet so I am flying blind so far.

P.S. - I just bought this tractor, its the 655 with MFWD, front 54 angle blade, 3pt 4' blade, model 60 loader, 50" deck, both sets of Ag. and turf tires each on there own set of rims, 1700hrs. I paid $7000. It all seems to be in good shape.

Mark, sounds like a great deal on that machine. I have just made a trade-in deal on mine. One dealer offered me $5,000 and the other offered me $4,750. I have been told that my machine is worth about $4,000 to $5,000 retail. I have a 650 4x4, 2500 hrs, front dozer blade, and 60 inch belly mower. I just saw a 650 with loader sell for $5,800 on ebay. I think you got alot for your money. Good luck with your machine. ....

Mark, I'm not sure about your 655, but on my 4100, there is a collar on the driveshaft end that connects to the tractor mid-PTO. To remove the driveshaft you have to twist the collar counter-clockwise and then you can pull the driveshaft directly off the PTO while holding the collar in the rotated position. ....

Hello
I have a shaft collar as you describe and I also rotate it and slide forward to un-hook it from the tractor ... But mine has become stuck just like one of the balls are out of place , and I can no longer get it off. Any Ideas on how to get it off ?
Thank you ....
