I just got a new home and looking for a Tractor.

I have found when buying cars the cost of ownership is better when you buy new and keep for as long as you can.

Is the same true with Tractors?

Absolutely true!!

I still have, and use regularly, a 1953 Ford Jubilee, a 1965 Ford 5000 and a 1970 Ford 3000. All were bought brand new by my father & grandfather.

Ironically, the Jubilee is now worth about 4 times what it was brand new, the 5000 about double and the 300 about the same as new. Talk about value!

Best of luck. ....

I think it is a mixed bag.

If you are handy and you happen to stumble upon a well maintained used Tractor from an individual owner you could do great.

If you are not so handy and buy off a dealer lot you could be up to some challenges and higher cost of ownership.

I would say if you have the cash buying new and keeping it forever is the cheapest way to go hands down. ....

In 2003 I bought a 1990 John Deere 970. It's still going strong. The only repairs I've had were new tires and a new battery.I do do the routine mtce like changing the oil. I only use it 3-4 times a year to mow 12 acres, some fairly rough.

I would guess it is worth what I paid for it still.

So, I would assess your needs. If you only use the tractor occasionally , a good used machine may be the answer. Tractors are a far stretch from automobiles in their sturdiness. ....

While car Manufacturers would like to make you think your car is a status symbol, your sense of yourself, just about everything, there still may be some for whom a tractor is an ego boast. But it is just a tractor, so if it works, it works, a new hood style is not going to impress anyone ot at least almost everyone :-( ....

It's funny you mention that. I bought a few new units this fall, I try to change some units every year, and of course got the usual replys to my ad for the used units.

"What year is it?"

My usual reply is "It's a Kubota, not a Corvette. Are you buying it to work, or drive it to the coffee shop?"

Best of luck.
