A couple of days ago I was moving bales of hay and my tractor, Massey Ferguson 261, mid 90's model, got stuck in reverse and the shift lever will not move.

The high-low shift lever will move but the lever to shift gears will not move forward or backward but will move slightly left to right. Does not matter whether the tractor is running or not, whether the clutch is depressed or not or if the high/low range lever is in our out of gear.

Looked at some videos on youtube that suggested pulling the filler plug next to the shift lever out and trying to slide that piece on the transmission rail with a pry bar or screwdriver but that didn't move the piece. really don't want to beat on the pry bar with a hammer.

If I have to pull the top cover of the transmission off to see what the problem might be will I need to pull the sheet metal right in front of the shift levers off?

If so it looks like a real pain, 4 bolts that come out have to be done from the top and to get to those bolts the fuel cell has to be lifted.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll find that if you take out the fill plug on top of the trans you can see the reverse gear by looking straight down.

Set the park brake, put the range lever in neutral, step on the clutch for a moment and then with a long screw driver or small pry bar try to move the gear fore / aft.

Usually this happens because the detent is so worn that the lever pops out of the socket.

Best of luck. ....

Murf,

How far down approx. are the gears you are speaking of?

If I am not mistaken the gear for reverse would be the very front one in the transmission.

Will try that, might have to get a longer screwdriver / pry bar tomorrow.

Thanks for your input. ....

You can almost touch them with your fingers. Yes, 1st / reverse is the front gear.

Best of luck. ....
