Hi I am new to tractors. I inherited a Shibaura Burtrak SD4000a and am keen to get it started. I am able to turn the engine by shorting the solenoid and can see that diesel comes out of the injectors. Smoke comes from the engine through the exhaust but the engine does not start. I have ensured the key is turned on and that the accelerator lever is pulled down to open the throttle, but am unsure as to what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

You may be familiar with diesel fuel stuff, but I gonna assume that diesel is new to you.

Say you have a cup of diesel and a cup of gas . If you light a match anywhere near the gas it will blow up. You could take a match and but it out in the cup of diesel.

Diesel is crazy powerful and why it is used in Tractors packs more punch than gas.

So to get a diesel started you need heat. The engine glow plugs have to get hot for the diesel to ignite.

Unlike a gasoline engine cranking will NOT be good enough to start it, a diesel needs hot glow plugs and cranking. ....

I don't know about that particular model, but most 'modern' diesels start and stop with a key instead of the older push / pull fuel shut-off. That means you need to have power to the fuel shut off relay (it's normally open and requires power to close) in order for the injection pump to produce enough pressure to fire the injectors.

If it's an older model with the old style manual push / pull fuel shut off is it in the correct position?

Best of luck. ....
