Mowed some of my lawn today, about an acre, and came up a small slope and heard a loud grinding, racheting sound and mower wont go forward. Drove it back to the barn in reverse and played with high low gear with same results. Anyone have any normal causes off the top of their heads. Everything else works but it doesn't sound good. Been using it for 8 years.

You probably have taken action on this by now and no one has commented but I would think you have gear issue in the transmission or either the linkage is not fully engaging into forward. ....
