I've got a Nortrac-254 W/YD385? It got Real HOT AND I HAVE COMPRESSION IN THE COOLING SYS. and water in the oil and water in the cylinder had to use the compression release to get it to turn over and starting was difficult
Is this eng. a wet or a dry liner block ? ( I assume it is a wet liner )(( I'm a retired diesel mech. 35 plus yrs. on 18 wheelers, 20 of it on CarHaulers)) I have both tractor and engine manuals but moved and have yet to find them so I would know the answer to some of these questions, DUH !
Has this eng. had a problem with the O-rings on the liners leaking, or if I have a cracked liner in it ??
I pulled the head off and I do not see where the head gasket leaked to the cooling system,

Dry sleeve. Meaning you should likely take a closer look at the head gasket. You should also have a new head gasket on hand because this is the time you should be checking the cylinder head and engine block for warping/splitting.

Thank You Greg; when I wrote the 1st. post I had torn it down but not cleaned any of the surfaces, this is like the old 71 & 53 series Detroit Diesels I built. Looking at the head gasket I can see faint signs of where it could have leaked on the forward side of the #2 cyl. to the water ports between #1 & 2 cyls. & cam side water port. Also the compression ring in the head gasket on #2 cyl. is split along the center line of the ring, its both a smooth break and a jagged break ? there are no burn or melt marks on the compression rings of head gasket on any cyl. This eng. has run a good many hours with the leak of compression into the cooling sys. and I would have expected to see the compression ring in the gasket & the gasket it self burnt or blown out. Like it an 305/350 chevy or ford eng. or the 11, 14, 15 liter Cummins Diesel engs.
I will get the head and block cleaned up and put my straight edge to them to ck. for warpage I have a head gskt. & will do what we did on the old 220 Cummins gaskets of spraying a couple of coats of metallic spay paint on the gasket before asy. ....
