When I was picking a tractor this past summer, dealers told me that all the 4X20 series tractors were identical except engine output. One dealer even hinted that after the warranty period, I could just get an after market engine chip to boost the HP. Does anyone know more nuance than design or component difference in the 4X20 series?

I am happy with what I got, I am just curious.

Sam; Deere did a bunch of number changes when they went to the 20 series, for example an equivilant to my 4310 is now a three thousand twenty something. I haven't really given them a good look yet, but I think your series tractor always used a Deere engine and the new three thousand series I think still uses the same basic engine as my 4310. I don't think the little rice burner in my tractor has a chip, they are still pretty basic, but likely the Deere engine you have is electronic. So just like the Power Strokes and the bigger Deeres somebody has a bootleg chip somewhere to be had. ....

Your right on the engine change. The 4105 uses the yanmar 3 cylinder and the 4X20 series all use the 4 cylinder turbo.

It just didn't ring true with me that deere would put out a single machine that with the change of chip went from 43 HP to 66 HP (engine HP). Is that really the only difference like one dealer told me? Can you buy that base 4120 and upgrade to a 66HP engine by simply getting a bootleg chip?

Does that mean that the 4120 is way over built for 43 HP or the 4720 is underbuilt for 66 HP?

It is interesting because I relied a lot on my brother's knowledge and experience. He has had a 4700 since 2000 and I was pretty comfortable that his tractor could do what I wanted to. But at the time, his was the largest CUT JD was selling. Now, mine is on the low end of the pack for large frame CUTS but it has the same HP as his.

I do worry about my tractor's reliability for the complication factor. But it is really nice having load match and cruise control when tilling and other ground work. ....

Sam; The only evidence I have about all the series being the same except the engine HP come from a JD factory tour when the 7 and 8 thousend ten series were in production. Your question was brought up to one of the engeneers about all the eight thousands being the same from the engine back. His reply was that some componets were the same for the economy of using like parts, but clutch packs were heavier, rear axles were heavier, etc. as horsepower incresed for more powrfull models in the same series. I would only assume that the same would be true in the newer series also. Frank. ....

That makes more sense than the dealer's statement that they were identical aside from the engine chip. He may have been using a simplified script avoiding details.I certainly took it with a grain of salt. It makes a sense to me that when you are putting 150% more horse power through it, heavier components are needed.

It would be interesting to know what is beefed up. I would think it would be all about power delivery like the clutch since the over all capcities aren't changed, just how fast they can be achieved. ....

The 4x20 series are very similar. There are definate tire and wheel size differences, but I did a random parts comparison, and found that almost all parts will interchange between the models. John Deere has always done a good job of "over building" their tractors. I have always felt that if you buy the lower horsepower model within a series, that the drivtrain components will be alot stronger than they need to be. In regards to engine horsepower, these are not electronic fuel systems. There is no "chip" to change horsepower. The different power levels are acheived with different fuel pumps, injectors and governor adjustments. ....
