New to the forum, hammered it pretty hard trying to find parts for this engine. Ford want's an arm and a leg. $427.00 for a gasket kit??? Machine has low hours but had rain in the cylinders. Have engine completly torn down, internals are in nice shape. Got a heck of a buy on this thing and came w/6 implements and a loader, implements never used, $2000 for all. Anybody know of a parts source other than Ford and the few parts that are available aftermarket? Need to replace 1 cylinder, bearings, seals, would like to replace rings after honing 2 cyls and a new one, although rings look ok & endgap .016. Machine only has 600 hours. Had clutch disks relined at carolina brake and clutch for $70.00, head reworked, $110.00, injectors rebuilt $180.00, getting crank turned .010. $200. Money is adding up. I noticed that there seemed to be some type of coating on the cylinders where they set down in the counterbore on the top of they block. Is this so? Or is it just my imagination? I am sure oem parts are available from a source other than ford at a better price, just dont know where to look. Anyone know? Any pointers on this rebuild?

Thanks,

scott

Hawkmanz,

Congratulations on the great buy! You simply can't beat the deal you got on the tractor, loader, and implements. Any time and money you put into this project will certainly pay off.

Have you tried SSB Tractor?

Yep,

They had a piston and/or rings only. I would think this engine would cross over to some other shibaura engine that has more readily available parts.

You can probably look around for other parts. My experience is: there may be other sources out there and I have tried them in the end it is simpler to deal with local dealer than trying to return parts that won't work to ebay or where ever. It's a lot easier to return to dealer. It always seems like each paint scheme has a quirk for each part no matter how generic.

I'd opt for factory parts. ....

let me guess, previous owner let the upright exhaust with no cover?

I'd spring for OEM parts from local dealer on rebuild unless you are absolutely against it.

I think the aggravation saved trying to track down other sources for parts would be worth the bucks.

IMHO best of luck with it. ....

There are very few aftermarket parts available. The only other way to get parts for it is from Shibaura in Japan, but they won't be any cheaper due to freight. You got it for the price you did because it needed these parts. For what you paid for it, it is worth spending the money on it. ....

The previous responses reflect my own experience. I've searched for parts for weeks including grey market specialist and salvage yards. One of the reason I bought an old Ford is that I expected it would be easy and cheap to get parts. I was wrong. I still think pound for pound I'd go for a 25 year old US/Japanese tractor over the newer Chinese made machines. Shibaura is now part of IHI. They make alot of small engines and miniexcavators. The parent company has a deal with Perkins and they make a small Shibaura/IHI/Perkins engine in Georgia--thousands of them. Does anyone know whether the short block on these Shibaura designed engines can be adapted to the older Ford tractors. My Shibaura is a LEM 853, 28hp 3 cylinder diesel. ....

Let me know if you give up on the engine and want to sell parts. I have two transmission gears I need for one of my 1910's and they are impossible to find. ....

We are capable of making new gears or putting all new teeth on an old gear. Internal splines are expensive to make. We grind off the old teeth, install a sleeve & cut new teeth for a lot less cost than most gear companies. We did a set for a 2-65 for $900. If you send the old parts, I'll give you a firm quote & you can decide if you want to proceed. Email me for my address or more info. ....

I just wanted to say thanks for the help and let everyone know that I got the gears back and I rebuilt the transmission and all is fine now. I'm still amazed someone could manufacture new gears from copying my broken ones. If anyone needs a new ignition switch or a used hydraulic pump, I have an extra of both. ....

Hello,
You mentioned you had a used fuel injector pump, do you still have this? I am also looking for a good used head for T853a.
Thanks
