I am looking at a 245 at the dealer that has a broken crankshaft. They are not big into used equipment and they know I can fix things. It has 800 hr with the 4 digit meter. So the hour are good. It is setting in their workshop a customer brought it in and when they found what was wrong the bought a new unit. The dealer had to take it apart to find the problem and that is where it is apart. I have looked at the block and it is doesn't even have a ware ring around the cylinders tops and the bore is perfect. It is a gear drive and would be a perfect size for me. tires are good sheet metal is faded but no dents. What would bee a good price? It would need a crank. New rings and bearings. The crank broke at the #3 connecting rod so it would need a new rod. I can't get a real price on the parts ,any help.
If it goes I will need to sell a real good B7200 with loader. Any Idea what it is worth.
Thanks Ron

Rgpbeme,

You should be able to get the L245DT for somewhere around 2000 dollars.

Your B7200, with loader, is worth about 7000 dollars, depending on hours and condition.

Compare prices at tractorhouse.com (click on tractors less than 40 horsepower.)

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a problem with the cranks in the L245 1101 motor or could this be a freak happening? ....

Rgpbeme,

I've never heard of any problem with that motor. There are many old L245s in operation around the country.

Usually, when a crankshaft breaks, it is due to operator abuse.......with ether being the #1 culprit.

In cold weather, some people will spray ether into the air cleaner to help get a diesel engine fired up. However, ether is a very bad choice, due to its explosive characteristics.

When ether ignites, it can cause the piston to drive downward with such force as to either deform a bearing, or break a rod, or crack a piston. I've never heard of a crankshaft breaking from using ether, but I'm sure it's possible. Putting ether in a diesel engine is akin to packing it with dynamite.

I'm all but certain that this crankshaft was broken due to operator abuse.

If you need parts, please check with Coleman Equipment, in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Give Mary a call, in the parts department. She's always been most helpful to me, and their parts department is among the best in the nation.

Joel ....
