Mom has a check valve in her sump pump that bounces after the pump shuts off. I replaced the valve and it did not help. I drilled a small hole in pipe below the check valve, no help. Do you think it could be water bouncing back against the valve> Would raising the check valve in the line Help? Any idea's will be appreciated
Tom

Broken was your mom born with a sump pump? ;P

Ohhhh you mean her HOUSE has a sump pump ahhhhhh-ha!

That's a good question about moving it up. But I gotta think that moving it down may be better as there will be more back pressure against the valve. I'd call the manufacturer or call your local plumbing inspector--he may not only know the Code but if this is a common problem with your particular valve. I do know my buddy's home sump pump valve tends to make a screaming sound. It's water bypassing it.

I'd be looking to see if the pipe that carries away the water may be blocked. That may be the problem, and not the valve.

Frank the back flow valve is suppose to keep water from returning or being siphoned back ino the basement. ....

Franky, picture a basement wall footer or footing. Typically there is drain tile that runs around the outer perimeter of the footer. In some cases there is another perimeter drain tile running on the inside of the footer. In any case, the tile runs under the footer and over to a sump or well in the ground at floor level. Also connected to the sump or well are the floor drains. They all tie into the sump. An electric sump pump is then lowered permanently into the well and plumbed with 2" pipe up and out to the outdoors and away from the house. Power is supplied by 110VAC from an outlet nearby. Thepump urns on and off with an automatic float on the pump. Some people use an additional pump in the well that runs on backup power from a 12V source. Some pumps used in areas where there is reliable city water, the water itself is used to spin the pump at a 2:1 ratio--that is, a gallon of pressurized city water will pull out 2 gallons of waste water, plus its own water useage (or somewhere around those figures)

Do you feel enlightened now? OR pun intended--"pumped up" tehehe ....

SW; Thanks for all the info on sump pumps, I hadn't heard of the water powered ones. We have built two homes and both have tile around the perimiter and under the basement floor, but in both cases we had an outlet to a field tile and didn't need the sump pump. One of my cousins owned a home in a nearby town that was below the gravity capabilitys of the city sewer. In his basement floor was buried a cement tank below the floor with a sewage pump that would kick on when the tank got full and pump the sewage out and up to the level of the end of the city sewer line. It never looked like a real cozy deal to me, but far as I know it still works. Hey EW we seem to be getting along almost too well lately, are you hittin the brown bottle or what? ....

It sounds like the water coming back and hitting the check valve once the pump shuts down. My old house was close to the water and the sump pumps came on every 45 seconds in the spring and early summer. I went thru all sorts of check valves and some times the valves got stuck closed and my sump pumps kept running in circles. I got really scared that my basement would flood if i was never home and power was out for a while. I hooked up a backup with a marine sump pump and marine trolling battery and eventually got rid of the check valve altogether..they just always got stuck and this way, water was always shooting out and i needed it too. My new home doesn't have any sump pumps in it at all, we have enough fall that it just flows outside in the woods somewhere. ....

Thanks EW for answering that question of Franks so masterferly LOL. I eliminated the check valve, lowered the sump pump (it was on house bricks) this allows the extra water from the pipe to be able to come back into the pit and not fill up more than before. In short, yes, it was water bouncing back into the flapper/ball on the chewck valve causing the noise.
Thanks. (PS. I stopped overe there after work today so this is the first time I could respond) Thank for the answers anyways ya all!!!!
EW. You got a TAN???? ....
