I'm looking at buying a 2000 4100 HST. I've been told by a dealer that there were issues with the hydrostat transmission in these tractors. Supposedly, JD covered problems under warranty and replaced/updated the transmission. He claims if that was done, the tractor should be good. Have you heard anything about that?

Also, I'm not sure what the hp is on this tractor- maybe 26 or 27 engine hp? In addition to mowing, I'd like to be able to push snow with the loader and also pull a hay wagon with 15-20 adults on it. Can it handle this?

jdc; I don't know about any hydro problems but if the dealer can document it was fixed under a Deere recall program then it likely is OK. The horsepower is 20 or less, they are at the low end of compacts far as power is concerned. The loaders on even the smaller compacts are kind of amazing as to what they can do a small bite at a time, but don't be in a hurry. Will it pull a hayrack with 15-20 adults? Probably on level ground on solid dry soil, but don't get caught having to stop in a hurry, the wagon with people will weigh twice as much as your tractor. Enjoy your day. Frank. ....

i HAD A 4300 AND THEY REPAIRED IT UNDER WARRANTY.WHEN I ASKED IF THEY CHANGED THE HYD FLUID THEY SAID IT WAS GOOD FOR LIKE 400 HOURS AND THE DID NOT.I PULLED FILTER OFF WHEN I BROUGHT IT HOME ANF IT WAS FULL OF METAL. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT THE GAVE ME A NEW TRACTOR..TO REPLACE MINE. NOW KEEP IN MIND JOHN DEERE DID NOT DO THESE REPAIRS THE COMPANT THAT BUILT THE TRANSMISIONS CAME BYT THE DEALERS AND DID THE REPAIRS ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER I RECIEVED MY NEW 4300 I WAS AT THE DEALER AND MY OLD TRACTOR WAS IN THERE WITH THE TRANSMISION OUT. ALSO THE FRIES ONES WERE VERY BAD TO SCUFF THE GRASS WITH THE FRONT TIRES AND I THINK LATER THEY CORECTED THAT PROBLEM I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE HYD MODEL 4300 IF IT WERE ME ...AS I HAD TWO. JOHN DEERE EVEN SENT COUPONS TO GET SOMETHING LIKE 2000 OFF THE OWNERS OF THEM ON A TRADE TO THE NEWER 4310. I USED MINE AND TRADED.I AM NOT BASHING OWNERS OF THE 4100 4200 4300 AND SO ON I MAY HAVE JUST RECIEVED ONE OF THE BAD ONES I AM SURE THEY WERE AND STILL ARE SOME GOOD ONES IN SERVICE. I DID BUY ONE OF THE FIRST ONES THAT AND ANYTIME YOU GET ONE OF THE FIRST I WOULD THINK YOU MAY EXPECT PROBLEMS.

I owned a 4100 Gear and still own a 4115 HST. The transmission problems were with the American made trannys on the 4200 through 4700 series.

The Japanese HST on the 4100/4110/4115 is nearly bullet proof.

The 4100 has a 20 horse engine and the HST provides 16 HP at the PTO.

If you are interested in the original specs I think I still have a copy of a 2001 sales brochure I could send via e-mail.

As Frank said a small tractor will pull several times its own weight with relative ease on level ground, but you can run into trouble with traction and braking on steep hills.

Adding ballast will assist in traction and stopping under any circumstance.

A 4100 will handle snow plowing and removal very well.

My 4100 had a manual transmission. That puppy could drive right up the front steps with the FEL loaded with firewood. Sometimes I wish I had it back. ....

I have a JD 27 HP hydro tractor, and have used it many times to- get ready for this... pull a hay wagon ride with about 10 to 20 people. When pulling the wagon (which is a converted 16 foot trailer) I keep it in 2nd gear, and the max speed is about 7 mph. I have never had a braking problem, or even notice that I am towing a load. In fact, I don't think I have ever used the brakes on this unit. EVER. ....
