I have an early 90's STX30 riding mower that won't start. Nothing at all happens when I turn the key. I have replaced/checked a lot of parts over the last few weeks and the mower ran fine but wouldn't start one day (no spark) and then the next it wouldn't do anything. Prior to that it would click 1-5 times when I turned the key, but then would always crank and start.

Parts replaced:
both relay's (under seat and at starter)
ignition and pto switches
battery
voltage regulator
spark plug
fuseable link at positive battery terminal

I have a new Neutral Saftey Switch, but have connected the wires together as a workaround (have not installed new switch) but it makes no difference whether I connect the wires together or not as the mower is dead either way.

Any ideas? or safety switch that I don't know about?

Thanks!

Have you checked the battery cables, the ground connection from the battery to the frame? Sometimes a little emery cloth on the frame where the ground cable connects and a NEW bolt will do wonders. If you have a volt meter use it to check the continuity from the batery thru the key switch, if you have continuity that far then just keep going from the battery to the next switch, conector or where ever a possible break in a circut could be, on and on till you find the loss of continuity. You will find it, just keep going. Beat of luck. Frank. ....

Has danger with this so be sure out of gear and blades off, but have you tried running a jumper cable directly from the battery to the starter? If that does not work, it should be the battery or the starter. If that does not work and you used only one cable then use both sides of the cable to see if there is a problem with your ground connection. If that works then you know it is between those points. You can keep bypassing items with the jumper cable until you find the break in the circuit. Battery can go bad with little or no notice. kt ....

kthompson, I put a new battery in it two weeks ago because it was draining, ended up needing a new starter solenoid. I have shorted the two connections for the starter and got some action, so I believe the battery and starter/solenoid to still be good. (thanks for the heads up on the blades/gear)

EW, it is "Stumpy". :) If you want to see something that will get your attention, look at pictures of mower accidents taken in emergency rooms. Of course it is not just mowers. Worked with major heavy equipment plant where a coworker had an arm twisted off. If not for the grace of God I could have been the one rather than him. BTW, still have all my limbs and trees.

A5, what do you mean by some action? ....
