Over at FarmPhoto there is an interesting discussion about the most hours you ever see on an original engine tractor. In short people say you rarely ever see more than about 20,000 hours.

This seems low to me. Is it? What's the most anyone has ever seen on a deere tractor?

Crawler; I've known 4020's and 4430's to get well over ten thousand, and sometimes aproach 15,000 hours with out an overhaul. Normaly these tractors were owned by people who were absolute with their matinence schedules, etc., and likely were the "Big Horse" that for the most part ran long and steady hours with proper sized loads so as not to run in a constant overload situation. Nine times out of ten another problem, like an oil cooler gasket, cylinder sleeve cavitation, etc. will take tham down before the last hour is gotten out of the basic engine. Anything can happen to the best of maintained engines, but for the most part the 3-4000 hour overhauls can be traced back to poor maitenence, abuse, by constant overload, using the wrong type lubricants, etc., etc. Enjoy your day. Frank. ....

Thanks Frank. I've done the math since posting and I guess 20,000 hours IS a lot for a tractor.

ie 200 days per year x 10 hours per day x 10 years!

A large dairy farmer in this area had a 4250 with over 20,000 hours without an overhaul. The tractor lived on a feed cart and ran 10 hours a day, seven days a week. He traded it in maybe 10 years ago and it still ran fine. We thought it had engine problems around 12,000 hours when the crankcase filled with coolant, but it turned out to be only a water pump. It had a powershift transmission that I don't recall that it ever had any repairs done on. ....

When the 3020's and 4020's came out with the 8 speed power shift people were a bit skeptical of them but they actually gave less troubles than the syncro's. I looked at a 4020 power shift on an auction once that had the linkage between the shift lever and the transmission wore out so bad you weren't sure which gear you had it in, but the transmission it's self still worked fine.
