I have a John Deere 301A, and would like to know what type of fluid goes in the rear axle housing, and is it also the same oil for the transmission?

Sharbin, the 301 uses Hygard transmission and hydraulic fluid in the transmission. The differential, axles, and transmission all are one big reservoir for the hydraulics. You fill it at the cap just behind the seat and the dipstick is at your right heel as you sit in the seat. ....
