Hey all, I'm new to the tractor scene. I have 14 acres with small saplings and brush right now, which I have started bushhogging with a rental. I am making it into horse pasture and eventually will build a house too. I am needing to buy a tractor and can't decide on which one to get. I am looking at either the New Holland TC30 4X4, Kubota 2800 4X4, or the Massey Ferguson 1528 4X4. All are close in price, so I am not sure which one to go for. I've heard that Massey Ferguson is the best. Thanks for the input.

What have you learned about the Case-branded version of New Holland's TC Boomer? I have a TC33D, but don't think I would use it for building a house---of course that would depend on what you plan to do with it (or not). Tractors have their place depending on how large they are and how they're equipped. You may find that you really need a full-size backhoe and/or a skid steer loader. I do commercial and residential contracting and found sometimes I need all three as one machine rarely fits the bill---unless I'm strictly hired to perform with one piece of equipment. If I were pressed though and had to make a decision to buy a tractor or skid steer I would go with a big skid steer 2500lb. cap. or larger with tracks (steel over-the-tire or rubber). ....

The best thing you can do is talk to the dealers of the tractors that you named. All tractors have their problems. All the tractors you named are good units. The dealer, after sale service, parts, warrenty you will need and want. I have 5 acres and have a 25hp 4wd with Fel. I do no mowing. I move dirt and care for a 100' drive. Try and match the unit you buy to the job you have in mind. Horsepower, more is better as long as the tractor is not to large to manuver.

good luck ....

Talking to your dealer is great, and I agree with that. But what's even better, is a real, hands-on demonstration. See if your dealers will let you rent one the way you want it say, with a loader for example, for the weekend. Let them know up front that you are doing some serious competitive shopping and you are about to make your purchase decison. Some may let you use it free, some may not. My dealer let me rent a used skid loader for $3000 a month. At the end of the month I returned it and decided to buy a new one. He didn't charge me a dime for the rental, and even gave me a $8000 discount on a new machine. SO my suggestion is if you decide to "rent" machine for the weekend pay the man and let them decide if they will waive the fee if you buy from them. If not no big deal---you still got the work done. ....

As far as Massy being the best.... They are by no means a bad tractor but they are definitely not the best. ....

Masseys look too out dated to me for being a new tractor. They really didn't try to be innovative in my opinion (which is why I like the NH styling which is unusual for a Ford product---except for those gawdawful headlights and grille---what were they thinking?) Yeah, and NH has some design/user-friendly flaws like the cutting brakes on the right side. ....

So if Massey isn't the best, then who is? I don't care about style and looks, just performance and durability. Thanks all for your input. At least I think I am looking at the right ones now. ....

That is very debatable. I would probably say John Deere, Kubota, Or New Holland. Mainly not because there units will never have a failure but because in the event that there is one you could have the parts you needed and be back up and running the next day in most cases. With some of the others with limited parts support it could be a couple days to a couple weeks till you have your parts. No parts no repairs no matter how good your dealer is they can not do magic like pulling Parts out of a hat. ....

I would suggest you look at the review in Compact Equipment. I would maybe add the Kioti to the list as it is one of the top 3 sellers in this size range. ....
