I am looking at either a JD 777, ZD21 Kubota, and a Cub Cadet Tank. All have 60" decks. Has anyone owned or mpared thse models? Is the Kubota worth the extra $750? Is the diesel engine that much better. Reply on any of these models, parts cost, availablity, ease of maintence, will be appreciated. Thanks

I do have experience on the following machines, Deere, Cub, Hustler, ExMark and Grasshopper and IMO, the ExMark is best cutting machine among the group and has outstanding reliability. As for price, I suspect it's rivals the Kubota in price. ....

The John Deere 757 and 777 are among their most reliable and sturdy ZTR's. The 7 Iron mowers set the industry standard for heavy duty build and reliablity. The 777 uses pretty much the same or substancially similar components and engine excepting the Kubota. I guess the biggest difference is the 7 gauge mower deck which is a one piece stamping vs. the 10 gauge fabricated/welded deck of most others. You would have to move up to the Deere 797 to go diesel. Not sure if that is in your budget. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these. My preference would be for the diesel but they may not have the engine rpm recovery speed of the gas engines and may be a good bit heavier. ....

Almost forgot. You may have to go with the 757 to get the 60 inch. Mower as the 72 inch mower comes standard on the 05 and newer 777's.
One other machine I would suggest that you take a look at is the John Deere F687. It is an "Odd Duck" but it does have some advantages and features other ZTR's don't have. ....

I'm concerned about the JD'S design of having the front wheels ridgid instead of mounted on an oscilating front beam. Will that affect the ride and cut of the deck? Are the gas engines as reliable as a diesel? ....

Kubota also uses the rigid axle front axle on the ZG series and the ride is far better on the ZD21-28 series. The standard features on both these mowers model Kubotas exceed all the players in the market place. Diesel engines go over 10,000 hours under some work conditions. Gas engines are at their max air coooled at about 3500 with liquid cooled about 500 more. These do depend on operating conditions ....

The 757 and 777 engines are kawasaki engines are indeed very reliable. The F687 uses a Kohler engine. ....

I corresponded with a number of landscape ZTR owners when I was looking at ZTR mowers last year. Almost all of them recommended the diesel engine (especially the Kubota diesel) both for performance and durability. I would have gone that route but did not have the extra cash at the time. ....
