What is the best lubricant to use on the PTO driveline?

Pretty much any good quality gun grease would do the job for both the u-joint crosses and slip tube. I also like to put a dab of grease on the PTO shaft splines before hooking up. ....

I have been using lockease on the splines and push button on the hookup yoke. Lockease is spray graphite. I have used it for years. It does not attract dirt/dust like grease does. I do use grease in the joints and in the slide. ....

On older equipment, it's not a bad idea to take the PTO shaft apart (just pull the one shaft out of the other). That way you can clean up the old grease and any debris that may have gotten in there. I did that with a manure spreader I borrowed. I shoved the male shaft in two or three times while cleaning it in between. It removed dirt and ancient grease. I thn applied a fresh coat of general grease and it works much better now. ....
