Does anyone know if JD lists attachments for the "70" series on the net. I have purchased a 1070 with a 440 loader/backhoe and would like to purchase a pallet fork. Before I can no longer purchase attachments. My JD dealer in North Dakota, as recently as last week, told me JD did not manufacture a pallet fork for the quick tach 440 loader. Have recently been in Wisconsin and the dealer there found a fork in Canada, its even green. Apparently a subcontractor in Canada manufactured this loader for them. Does anyone know the name of this company (WEB address) and if they are the manufacture of the 8B backhole or is it WOODS?Could someone tell me the difference between the 8, 8A, and 8B backhoes and if the buckets are interchangable?While reading the owners manual I cam across the attachment list. And on the list was a log splitter. Would this mean that JD also contracted some company to build this and paint it green?Planning on using the 3 point log splitter to split the wood then stack the wood on pallets (so I only have to move the split wood once manually) and fork the pallets to a location for storage in the winter months. Since this machine came with a backhoe does it mean that an additional valve,(can't think of the valves'name off hand), has been installed with the control lever.The reason why I am asking these questions is that I purchased the 1070 5 months ago. At present my work does not allow me to go home with exception of 2 weeks per year so am looking forward to inspecting my investment over the Christmas holiday. I wanted a dependable tractor that I could get on and go, that I would not need to work on with exception of normal maintenance. If I wanted to install a 3rd valve, how hard and expensive would it be. May want to put a grapple fork on the bucket and will need a 3rd valve/lever to operate it. Since I purchased this 1070 in North Dakota, could I expect that JD has winterized coolant system to -40 below at factory?Any information would be welcomed!Duane Volk North Dakota

Duane, Since the 4000 series now replaces the 70's attatchments are getting hard to come by.I have a 1070 with the 440 loader and I also needed a set of pallet forks.After contacting all the JD dealers in Eastern Canada and not finding any I began to look for a set of used forks off a lift truck. I found a set of 42in. ones and had a frame made up by the local welding shop.At the same time I brought in the loader bucket and had them make a quick attatch system like the new 4000's.I can now switch from the bucket to the forks in seconds single handed.The forks were $100.00 and the frame and quick attatch system another $250.00
This tractor also had a back hoe but was not included in the deal but the hydralic outlets are there and they are controled by a valve on the left side of the seat down near the four wheel drive lever.You could instal your grapple arm to work off this control.I am in the process of making one to use with the forks.Great way to pickup logs.
I tried both the three point log spliters and the totaly independent ones and bought a stand alone. I just found it more practical to set the splitter up near the open wood shed and the log pile. I saw the logs then split them and stack the wood in the shed for drying.
The most practical attatchment that I have is a winch that mounts on the three point and I use it in the winter to haul the trees that I cut down.This way the tractor stays on the road and with the 150ft. of cable I can snake out the trees on the snow.The logs stay clean and you don't damage the other trees by driving through them with the tractor.
Check the antifreeze and the engine oil viscosity -40 is damm cold!

If your 440 loader has the quick tach bucket(only requires removing 2 lynch pins) then you can use the same boom mounted attachment that go on the 420,430,460 loaders manufactured now. I know first hand because I built a loader mounted blade for my Dad's 440 loader last year and was pleasantly surprised when it mounted right up to my 420 loader this year. That mounting system, by the way, makes it VERY easy to build your own attachments cause it elimnates the need for precision alignment of the four pivot pins on conventional boom mounts.

I just sold a 97 955 that I made forks, for they look like factory.I used all new iron and I spent about$200. I also made it quick-tach by cutting off the brackets that hold the bucket, so all the geometry stayed the same. I used 4" channel with 11/2angle iron welded underneath, then tapered the last 2 feet and used 3" square tubing for the uprights never a problem but I don't know if I wou;ld try it on a420-440 loader or not,the carriage was easy but I'll probably buy fork blanks this time then I know my 4400 won't have to much power for it.
