thanks for your reply where abouts are you selling them for that price?? i would be willing to travel depending on the deal im getting for the travel time.. i think basic service i could manage on my own. if not i have a good friend who is a tractor mechanic and can fix anything on one. yeah that deal i thought was a bit high as well but i have seen them higher and this dealer is about 15 minutes from me, what do ya think?? thanks again

Yes they do help. But they get some getting used to. Your best bet would be to get a removable tooth bar. For that size bucket you are looking at about $250. They are no good for snow removal you would end up tearing your drive way to pieces.

I have a JD730 FEL on a JD990. I switch on the go alot between a bucket and forks. Sometimes the two attachment carriers (they are the points of attachment at the end of each loader mast--the top end of each attachment carrier slides into the hook or "ear" on the top of the bucket/forks and the bottom has a strap with a hole that goes over a pin on bottom of the bucket/forks). Anyway, when I disconnect say the bucket, sometimes one of the carrier attachment drops down lower than the other. As a result, when I go to pick up the forks, one side may mate with the "ear" but the other side is rolled more upright so that it won't catch its "ear." I have tried curling the loader ful up when I drop the bucket off to get both sides in sync. This doesn't work for reasons I don't understand. I know this is hard to visualize which is why I have waited a couple of years to post the question. The problem really slows me down. What's the fix?

I just sold my 455 jd with bucket, 54inch deck, and front blade, chains, kept the hanging weights, 350 hours. It was 4 years old and the dealer brought it for 8,000. Hope this helps.

When doing your service it is a good time to look at the different pieces that make up a tractor. Look at the wiring noting where it goes and see if anything might be pinching it or a hose or line rubbing against steel. Look at the linkages and see if any stop nuts look loose. Look for any small leaks,weaps or what ever you choose to call it as it would be good to check later to see if it is getting any worse later. Don't be afraid to hit it with a grease gun at this time or to maybe throw a little penetrating oil on a part that might have been sticking on you.

bmlekki, I get all of my log skidding cable from Bailey's Logging Supply. Great folks to deal with and they have lots of very useful stuff. I have a 12 & 14 ft. choker cable that I use to pull logs with and I had them make me up a custome length 100 ft. choker cable for pulling logs up hills and out of piles of logs. The choker cable work great. I normally just pull the log laying on the ground but you can rig up some kind of pulling hitch that you can connect a short choker or two on and use the 3 pt. hitch to lift one end of the log in the air a few inches to ease skidding the log. This aids traction but be VERY careful when skidding a big log on inclines and uneven ground. The log can slide into you and or your tractor or pull the tractor over on a steep enough slope. That is why I have the 100 ft, choker cable. Yes it is a BIG PIA to unravel and wrap up, but it is much safer.

A dealer a few hours away has a used Brush Bandit 150X (or 150XP?) chipper with 1200 hours on it for sale. This is a 12" drum chipper with hydraulic feed, powered by a 4 cyl. Ford engine. They're asking $8900 for it. They claim it has just been serviced (whatever that means) and that it runs great but would be sold as-is. Does this seem like a reasonable price?

The American Institute of Steel Construction publishes standard shape tables for all hot rolled shapes available in the US. (AISC.org) You can also abtain this information from the U.S. producers of Structural Steel shapes, NucorYmato, txiChaparral, and Steel Dynamics. Bethelehem and United States Steel used to publish shape tables but neither one of them produce hot rolled structural shapes any more.

A lot of them used to arrive that way, the dealers would fix and replace a lot of minor items, usually 4 new tires too.

I'm told the plant was purchased by a group of Polish businessmen who have really turned things around the last few years.

The basic tractor was never really bad, it was just built by uncaring lackadaisical labourers who didn't have to worry about keeping their jobs no matter what kind of crap they turned out.

A neighbour of ours bought a 8045 that was unused but had been sitting on a delaers lot for several years. He spent one whole winter redoing it, tires, wiring, trim, the whole shooting match. Mind you he didn't put a value on his time but he said it has been trouble-free ever since.

He said it cost him US$12,000 (Cdn $16,000) for a brand new 80hp 4X4 with a heated cab, including 4 new tires, I'd say that was a bargain. He later found a new non-current loader for it that cost him another US$3,500 and some time to fabricate the mounts.

It is incredibly heavy compared to a domestic machine, but it sure works.

The Walmart Super Tech Heavy Duty Hydraulic & Transission oil will meet the required spec. It is made for Walmart by Specialty Oil Company which is a division of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company. I used is in a Cub 154 Lo Boy for over 10 years with no problems. It is a BUNCH cheaper than buying at the dealer.

Dan, there are so many of those tractors out there it's unbelievable.

I know for instance, with the Ford Jubilee, which is the same vintage, you can buy points, carb kits, etc., over the counter at any Ford store. In fact, I'm told Ford car dealerships can still order you parts for a flathead V8 because there are so many of them still in service on generators and such.

If you're that concerned, check with a few local dealers and ask them what is & isn't still available for them.

You could always change the oil now and put in more break-in oil. The JD dealer here has break-in oil on their shelves.
