I recently bought a L3400DT w/ FEL and paid about what you were quoted for the JD. I checked out JD, MF, NH & Kubota tractors in the 30-35 hp range. The 3400 was the overall best deal. I have used this tractor to move 20 yard loads of #4 rock, bushhog 5 acres, and constantly use the FEL to move heavy items. I am very satisfied w/ this tractor.

The jd 401 is an industrial model that is very similar to the 2020 or 2030 in agriculural models. They were around 60 horsepower and available in either gas or diesel. They were very reliable machines although they are between 30 or 40 years old and some have many, many hours on them by now. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Any parts you need should be available at any John Deere dealer. I have gotten decals and knobs recently and all were readily available. If you are looking for aftermarket suppliers, I've never researched that. If you are looking for used parts I have used http://www.rvtractorparts.com/home/index.html. They carry anything you need for large farm tractors. They may carry compact parts also.

westone, I'm asuming that a 3000 has a category one three point hitch. What kind of sickle mower are you trying to attach? Are you sure of whether the mower is a cat. one or a cat. two hitch? I'm sure the welded steel unit you mention is called a quick coupler hitch. I don't remember the different hitch category dimensions right off, but a cat. two is just a bigger stronger verson of a category one hitch, a cat three is stronger and bigger than a cat. two, and so on up the line thru cat. five hitches for really big tractors. Check the owners manual of both your tractor and the mower to be sure of the hitch sizes. Hope this helps, Frank.

I am a bit rusty on this topic..... it's been a long time since I did calculations like this when loading an aircraft, so I could be off-base.

I believe the Center of Gravity in these calculations should be the center line of the front axle. That being the case, the ballast box would have a much longer arm and more "weight" than the 7.5 inches give it in your calculations.

Why the front axle? I have gotten the rear end off the ground on my 4100 a couple of times and the front axle was the pivot point.

My seat of the pants experience tells me that a 700 pound ballast box beats a 350 pound rear blade every time for keeping the rear wheels on the ground. But I am open to other opinions.

Thank you Mr.White, I have found this oil seal that is below the pulley toward the mow deck. Is their a seal where the pulley shaft comes out of the gear box? thanks again.

Thanx, Big Tractor.I could certainly use the info on clutches but I have no fax number.Ihave a number that I can use but am hesitant to put it out where all can read the number. I haven't broken it in two yet but it acts more like some of the interior linkage or nuts and bolts have come undone or broken.Will send a post it when I open it up.

$14,700, tc33 da at corriher, add a $3300 loader (just a guess) and a $1800 mower (should get a pretty one for that kinda a money) that comes to $19,800. Add extra for your tires (turfs) and your in the ball park of what you got for price. You may be a touch higher but read ALL the posts about YOUR dealers. I would not buy unless my dealer was within a reasonable drive from my house. Sounds to me like your in the ballgame jubilee!!

Chief, the LX4 blade tip speed is 11,440 FPM, about 20% greater than the one from Corriher.

A good friend of mine & competitor landscaper had a 2910. I owned a 790 for 5 years. Although you probably wont use it to do the things we do with our tractors, I was always envious of his tractor. He had sooo many advantages like loader capacity lifting wieght, reaching height, etc. Dont get me wrong, I accomplished alot of work with that 790 & it is a " bullet proof" unit. It took me longer to accomplish taskes than it took him on his 2910 & I had to push my machine harder then he had to. Also, If I had a penny for everytime I slammed my knees into the dash board I would be a millionaire! I'm 5'10 so if your taller then me, You may want to think about it.

I'm not sure about GST. It has a manual, 4-range clutch shifter to right of seat, and a forward/reverse lever on left of steering column (HST?).

My power beyond and three point splitter was about the cheapest way to get into a system.

A separate PTO pump and a storage tank with several gallons of oil can easily cost more than a power beyond kit.

If I was splitting wood for a living I think there are better set-ups. But as a homeowner I am quite satisfied with the outfit I got.

Most grease gun couplers can be turned (screwed in and out) to adjust how tight they snap down on the fitting. I have several fittings that I have to loosen the coupler to get the grease gun back off of the fitting.
