With all due respect, there just has to be more to this story. I don't doubt that there was a problem, but it may have been a manufacturing defect, or it may have been screwed up by the dealer during installation, or maybe the wrong loader mounts were included with the loader, or maybe some retaining mechanism was left off, or maybe the dealer assembled the loader out of mismatched parts they had laying around but something just doesn't seem right. How many times have you heard of loaders just "falling off"? I spent some time googling on this problem with various search strings and nothing popped up so surely it's not a common problem.

In theory you are probably correct. The problem is the tongue height on my triple axle flat bed doesn't match that swinging drawbar height nor does my dump trailer. My dump trailer tongue is very, very high. My F250 4x4 with off-road package still needs a 4" inverted drop to match the tongue height.

Safety and common sense are always important in all instances.

Are buckets brand specific,or industry standard as far as pin plaacement ad interchaingability? A friend has an older [yellow] Ford tractor with a 18" hoe bucket,I'd like to use the bigger bucket on my NH occasionally.He has the tractor an hour or so away from here, so its not a matter of going next door to look at it !

The knocking sound and balck smoke could also be caused by excessive fuel delivery to one cylinder.

Debris which has passed the filters and pump but is trapped at the injector tip can cause this to happen. If it occassionally jams the injector tip open causing a large fuel dump into that cylinder it would result in EXACTLY that set of symptoms.

If that is the case the only real solution is to pull all the injectors and send them to an injector shop for a cleaning and overhaul. This is not expensive and is more of a PITA than anything else, it's usually pretty cheap too, up here it's $10 per injector.

Here is a diagram showing the actual parts fit and why. Basically you are installing a threaded adaptor to thread the block heat into since the block is not threaded in that area.

A good, solid, simple used tractor well within the price range you speak of would be the Kubota L245DT, with an L1200 FEL, and L590 RFM. They were an early to mid 80's machine but you can find machines out there still in very good condition if you look around a bit. The above machine with attchments and perhaps a box blade and a small PHD would be around $4,000. Some of the other L Series models manufactured over the years would also be a good choice.

An option you may not have considered with respect to buying new would be a John Deere 790. It is a bit out of the price range you specified but if you are wanting a new tractor with a warranty and great financing, the 790 is one of the best buys on the market. Alos a very solid and reliable tractor.

If you are wanting a hydro type transmission, that pretty well restricts you to a few machines that may be at the top of or out of your price range.

I got my tires loaded on my B7500. The lighter machine, is easyer on grass. But i used mine for grading and landscape work. So i couldn't put a weight box on it. You can build your self one very easy out of a 55 gallon plastic drum and some concrete.

As already said and covered, watch foot position when this happens. If this is not the problem, it could be a problem with the controller for the ehydro or faulty ehydro system sensor. (i.e. perhaps an faulty pedal postion potentiometer. There is a very in depth trouble shooting procedure for this that your dealer can perform to ensure proper operation and weeding out the offending sensor.

Wildman, When I was a kid we used to say "Break 'em in fast and they are fast." At least it sounded good then because no on had anything new. Seriously It won't hurt to take it even near redline for short durations. And change oil early. Most of the metal is sloughed off in the first few hours that you run it.

Solo, first of all, welcome to our board!!

The L2900 is very much like your L185, if it is not abused it will be pretty much indestructible.

I would recommend the first service at 50 hours, in fact we do a second service at 100 hours again just to be sure that there is no more debris, etc., still in the system from manufacturing, and also to check for any metal particles that could indicate a fault early on. It is very cheap insurance.

Two thousand sounds pretty good for most engines. For scraper work, I select a gear that will carry the max loads I expect without lugging the engine. I then set the hand throttle for a slow as I want to go and use the foot throttle to increase ground speed. I increase the rpm if the engine lugs and then maybe have to find another gear for the speed I want. Sometimes I need to slow down in a hurry and it's good it happens just by taking my foot off the throttle.

I think most newer small diesels have broad power curves. Old ones were almost constant rpm engines. The max torque points can be at rpm's higher than pto rpm and HP also may increase above the pto point. Nothing wrong with running them at lower rpm's far as I know as long as they aren't lugging and the load is enough to get the temp up into the normal range.

Diesels do like to work though. If they're chugged around to yard too much at low rpm they gum up and start puffing gray smoke. The oil life also is shortened. If that happens, a stint of hard labour usually straightens them out.

Just for curiosity I looked up the three largest JD farm tractors we have on the farm, #1- 00 model 8410, #2- 96 model 8300 and #3- 99 model 7810. The prices listed were pretty close to the asking prices around here except the 8410 was maybe 5- 10 % higher than asked locally. I just haven't saw enough 4000 series in the dealer ads to make any comparisons. Tractors vary quite a bit by region, for example in Dairy country a particular model might bring a premium for use on a bunk feeder trailer, while the same model in grain country might not be anything special and hard to sell. Looks like to me thay are using an average of prices asked by dealers. The steel cost increase will of course affect the cost of new tractors just like anything else, so that eventually btings up the prices of good quality late model tractors. Frank.

Broken; Just a couple other thoughts. Whether you build or buy a sprayer, when you're done using roundup and want to use another pesticide to for example spray your fruit trees, tomato patch for blight, spray the lawn for grubs or whatever get a good quality tank cleaner to get all the roundup residue out of the sprayer system. I've never saw it at TSC, but most any farm supply outlets that handle larger volumes of pesticedes for farm use will have it on hand. Just follow the directions on the can, some call for leting the cleaner soak overnight in the sprayer and some don't I've used both kinds they both work. When you're done for the season pour a couple tablespoons of oil in the intake of a roller pump, turn it a few times by hand then you won't have stuck rollers the following spring. I don't remember what the tank cleaner costs, but I don't think it was all that much. We got a beautiful inch of rain over night here, the corn and bean futures will probably take a nose dive today being a good portion of the corn is planted in our aeria. the Ag business sure keeps you guessing these days, but I've allways loved a challenge. My dealer said the loader brackets are being changed for the FT 80. Also said they are moving into the new plant. Haven't heard anything yet from him on delivery of the loader and brackets.

I saw a new loader on a FT70 and sure like those quick attach pins. My son was happy too. He's always helped me change from the bucket to the hay spear and if the bucket wasn't setting just right it could take a while with plenty of time for some choice words to be used too.(LOL) That's a big improvement on the loader.

I believe the dealer said there is a 3 years warranty on the drive train. Good to see them back the product like that too. Sounds like the new plant will increase production quit a bit. I think he said they were sending out 4,000 units from the old plant per year and would now be able to ship out 12,000 per year.

I have a digital camera and when I get delivery I'll sure post a picture. Well I have to figure that picture posting out first.(grin)

Well did not get the swivel seat (he delivered it before he read my email. Just as well though I have not had a problem with the standard seat yet. 11 hours in it give or take and love every min. (remember I have a 8N seat as my other option) so this one is like a Cadilac. After cutting the field and then plowing in a bit too wet of soil I had alot of washing to do!!! Heck I even liked that!!!

Pulled a 8N off the neighbor a couple years ago after a torque over. The ROPS would have saved him a callapsed lung and a long hospital stay. He was lucky. Tractors can easily go over backwards as well as roll-over. Torque overs happen just as fast.

Don't get a tractor without a seat belt and ROPS.
